NOTES.

The match between the South Island team and Wanganui, played on Saturday, proved much more even than was anticipated, (writes our Wanganui correspondent). The supporters of the local team expected to see the visitors badly beaten, but though they lost by 20 to. 16, it was only after a very even struggle. The play was not of a high standard, the form shown by the locals being very disappointing, while the visitors did not show any brilliancy. The weather was dull, but kept fine and the ground was in capital order. Wanganui’s score was made up of four tries/(two converted) and a potted goal, while the visitors also got four tries and converted two, so that the potted goal, made all the difference. Wanganui had to play without Coutts, at centre, and this weakened the

backs considerably, but the forwards will have to do much better if they want t-ohoTd.- their own with Wellington, Otago, Canterbury and other visiting teams, while a great improvement will also have to be effected in the play of the backs. * * * * The inter-college match between King’s College and the Auckland Grammar School will be the principal attraction at Alexandra Park on Saturday, and as the issue of this game decides the Auckland secondary schools championship the greatest interest is attached to the fixture. Their former meeting resulted in a drawn game, and the match in question constituted one of the brightest exhibitions of Rugby given at Alexandra Park this season. Both King’s and Grammar teams show the results of sound coaching in the finer points of Rugby, and it is a regular treat to witness their representatives in competition. The enthusiasm displayed at a King’s-Grammar match by the barrackers of the rival colleges is alone well worth a trip to Epsom to Witness, and Saturday’s contest should prove the keenest that has ever taken place between the leading secondary schools in Auckland. The play of the Grammar School backs is very fine to witness, while King’s will have to rely principally on their sterling set of forwards in their bid for victory.
