ENGLISH DERBY WINNER.
It is by no means improbable that Tagalie was one of the 100 to 1 division for the Derby just prior to the running of the One Thousand. At any rate, at the beginning of last month her name did not appear in a list wlncl) gave the prices of 2 9 other p. ssiblo starters for the Derby. Even as late as a week after the One Thousand she was quoted at 2 5 to 1, so that, although she led all the way in the mile race, it 'could seem as if her victory did not greatly impress English racegoer?. Like so many other fillies able to stay well, Tagalie does not appear to take the eye, one well-known London scribe referring to her as “a plain, mean-looking, rather spiry filly with a goose rump, but of the varminty type, all wire and whipcord.” Tagalie, who is owned by Mr W. Raphael (whose colt Louviers ran second to Minoru in the 190 9 Derby), is trained by D. Waugh at Newmarket, and is the first to pull off the One Thousand Guineas and Derby double. She is also the first grey filly to win the Derby, the only other successful grey being Gustavus, who scored as far back as 1821. it was hard luck for Hewitt that he was not on Tagalie, and it will be interesting to know why Mr Raphael gave the preference to Reiff, who of recent years has done most of his riding in France. Cyllene, who has been in the Argentine for a few years, has sired three other English Derby winners in addition to Tagalie —namely, Cicero, Minoru, and Lemberg. At the Argentine sales last year twelve of Cyllene’s colts averaged £3O 62 each, and eight of his miles £1640 each. The second horse, Jaeger, is by Eager from Mesange, by Persimmon from Golden Tresses, by Orvieto; while Tracery (third 1 is an American-bred colt, being by Kock Sand from Topiary, by Orme from Plaisanterie. — “Sydney Referee.”
Mr T. H. Lowry has claimed the following names for his rising two-year-olds: Bay filly by Grafton — Peace, ‘‘The Hague”; bay filly by Grafton —Langrel, “Landrail”; black colt by Royal Fusilier —Gossip, ■"Blackguard”; black colt by Royal Artillery—Quietest, “Moddite”; bay colt by Soult —Monoquil, “Soltano”; bay colt by San Francisco —Miss Gladys, “St. Francis.”
