WELLINGTON.

(From Our Own Correspondent.) WELLINGTON, May 27. Capital acceptances are assured for the winter meeting of the Otaki Maori Racing Club that takes place on Monday and Tuesday next. Provided the climatic conditions are satisfactory a very successful fixture should eventuate. Returned sportsmen from the Wa-> nganui meeting speak in high terms of the starting of Mr R. H. Skipwith and, judging by his latest efforts, Mr Skipwith promises to become very proficient at the barrier. Gaelic, who for some time past has been trained by W. Garrett, is now being looked after by J. Phillips at Masterton. The son of Bonnie Scotland is expected to play a prominent part in the decision of jumping events at the A.R.C. meeting. L. Traill, who has severed his connection with the Porirua stable and is riding work at Trentham, rode his first steeplechase winner in Drudgery at Wanganui on Thursday last. From the manner in which he handled his mount Traill s services should be in keen demand by owners of ’chasers during this season’s lepping events. Gaelic, Te Waharoa, Drudgery and Zante will be ridden by L. Traill in their engagements at Ellerslie. J. W. Lowe, the Trentham trainer, has received an addition to his team by the arrival of a filly by Sir Laddo, who for some time past has been trained by F. Porter at Awapuni. The newcomer is a promising sort and a successful career is anticipated for her. C. Pritchard, the Hutt trainer, is taking Gay Lawless, Aema, Mediterranean and Biddy to the Otaki meeting. The quartet are all well forward on the score of condition.

The local sportsman who races as H. Whitney has sent C. Pritchard two more horses to train. One is a bay colt by Cyrus from Levant and the other is a two-year-old gelding by Conqueror from Levant. Both juveniles were bred by Mr Whitney on his embryo stud farm at Waikanae, and on present appearances appear to be possessed of galloping ability. The many friends of the wellknown r der T. Pritchard will regret to hear that it was found necessary to rebreak and reset his broken leg last week. Pritchard is bearing his trouble very stoically and his many well wishers trust that he will soon be restored to good health. Goldbird is being got ready for the remainder of th s season’s hurdle events. The gelding appears greatly benefited by his brief respite from activity and is in excellent condition to go into training. C. Emerson has been engaged to ride Mon Ami, St. Felix and Arikatea in their contests at Otaki on Monday next.

The Charlemange II —Hermosa colt Champagne who is domiciled at Porirua, was sold last week by Mr St. J. Buckley to a southern sportsman. Dearest, who was taken South to the North Otago meeting last week, gave a very inglorious display and may in consequence discontinue her Dunedin engagements. It is hard to account for the mare’s poor showing as she had been doing so well prior to leaving Porirua 'for Oamaru.
