WELLINGTON.

’Krom Our OA’ii Correspqpdent.)

WELLINGTON, January 8.

J. H. Pollock’s adjustments for, the first day’s handicap events of ‘‘the Wellington Racing 'Club have been sl.jccwu to a critical examination by sportsmen. The opinion general amongst those able to form a right conclusion is that the veteran handicapper has pat forth his best work in the interests of the club. The imposts are very equitable and there should be a liberal response from owners when acceptances fall due.

Byron has been well supported from the right quarter for the Wellington Cup. This fact points to the colt being G. D. Greenwood’s elect in the event named.

Blue Lake, who is now being trained by C. .Pritchard at the Lower Hutt, wen her first race under fier new' mentor’s guidance at the Wairarapa meeting. The Royal Fusilier filly is to compete at the Foxton meeting.

The Foxton Racing Club have completed some extensive additions to their buildings. Chief amongst the improvements are up to date latrine accommodation for both ladies and gentlemen, and t..e erection of a siilent totaLbatOr. These adjuncts wiL br.ng the requirements thoroughly up to date and will satisfy the club for many years to come. This club have a penchant for studying their patrons’ needs; and they well deserve the\ public’s support.

With the aid of Odessa and Turna the local owner, H. Whitney, won six races during the Christmas meeting. He, won two races at the Manawatu meeting,; and four at the Wairarapa gathering, truly an excellent record. They have been give an opportunity to earn further distinction at the W.R.C. meeting.

In Sir Antrim, Sir Moutoa, Puketotara, Matapouri, Stevens, Lady Laddo, and Ambrosian, the Foxton trainer, A. M. Wright, will have a formidable team to do battle for his stable at the meeting. With such cattle to work on the genial “Alf” should be doing some of his clients a good turn at the gathering. F. J. Carmont, the Levin trainer, will be represented at the Foxton meeting with a useful little team. His list will include Parewanui, Brown Trout, Thetis, and Adella, all of whom are fast running into form. Afterthought is to be sent to the Foxton meeting; The Merriwee mare has been running well in her recent engagements, and she should at last give a good account of herself.

Aberbrothock continues to train on satisfactorily at Awapuni, and there is every prospect of the son of Papakura fulfilling his W.R.C. engagements.

Gipsy Belle and Dearest, who bear no ’ill effects Worn ,their Auckland visit continue to train on satisfactorily at Porirua. The former is very fit, whilst the full sister to Master ■Soult is also rapidly getting into galloping trim. The pair should be In capital fettle for their Trentham contests.

The starting at both the Manawatu and Marton meetings was far from satisfactory. Something will have to be done to remedy this state of affairs, and the public are beginning to cry out. If the present system is allowed to continue then the "only solution of the difficulty will be for the Racing Conference to start a school for embryo starters. The starting at some of the meetings the writer has attended recently has been atrocious, loud complaints being heard on all sides. The racing clubs have the remedy in their own hands. Adella, a full sister t$ the defunct Tawhera (Conqueror—Louie), created a favourable impression by her galloping powers at the Wairarapa meeting(. She ’was not £uite ready at Tauherenikau, but gave one the impression that her gallops in public were doing her good. Adella will be a starter at Foxton where she should keep her opponents "busy in the sprint events.

R. A. McDonald, the Levin ownertrainer, is bustling Hermia and Ascalon along. The pair are destined to assist at Trentham.

Khamsin, who won a race at Tauherenikau, runs in the name of “Lance Wood,” the assumed cognomen of T. ,M. Wilford, the Mayor of Wellington, who is now on his way to London.
