TURF RESULTS.

POSTPONED EVENTS FINISHED. GOOD RACING. ,

The four races on the spring programme of the Takapuna Jockey Club that had to be postponed on account of the boisterous and wet weather on the 2nd instant were run off last Saturday afternoon. At midday everything seemed to promise a beautiful afternoon, and as a consequence a large crowd gathered at the North Shore course; but unfortunately about three o’clock the sky became overcast, and shortly after a heavy squall came up, accompanied by a shower of rain. This, however, soon passed, and although it to some extent marred the day’s pleasure the programme was concluded. The racing provided in the four races was particularly interesting, and all the finishes were keenly contested. In view of the unfortunate weather the club had to contend with it is most gratifying to note that some consolation was provided by the increased totalisatoi’ returns. On Saturday last the betting was very free, and on the four races £7172 was put through the machine, which brought the total for the meeting up to £27,543, as against £19,619 10s for the corresponding days last season. The extra work entailed by the inconvenience of postponing a meeting in progress must have been very considerable,' but it did not daunt the officials of the club, for they carried through the meeting with commend-

able success under the direction of Mr. Robert Wynyard, the painstaking and courteous secretary. xn the absence of the official starter (Mr. C. O’Connor) at Woodville, Mr. F. W. Edwards acted and was very successful at the barrier.

Seven youngsters started in the Latino Handicap,- of which Dido, with an impost of 9st, was made a hot jfavourite, but failed to materialise, although at one stage of the race the Soult filly was in the lead. Turning into the straight Launacost put in a strong claim, and soon established a lead, and in the final stage had no difficulty in stalling off a challenge by Indulgence. The Spalpeen colt finished up with a full two lengths margin. Semolina, who came well at the finish, ran Indulgence to a neck for second honours. Dido finished fourth.

Lucille was the best supported of tne six starters in the Cautley Handicap, but gave a most disappointing display. The winner proved to be Miss Livonia, who distinguished herself at the recent Ellerslie spring meeting by winning a double accompanied by two substantial dividends. On Saturday again ner victory was associated with a fair reward to her supporters. Lady Dot filled the role of runner-up, being defeated by a short length. Lucille was a length further away third. A protest was entered against the winner for crossing, but it was dismissed after the stewards administered a caution to O’Shea, the rider of Miss Livonia. The Pupuke Handicap was a good betting race and provided a most exciting finish. Ten horses faced the starter, of which Fuss, Goodwin Sands, Elegance, La Reina and Firelock were all well backed in that order. Firelock and La Reina were the first to break away and were companions throughout. Coming down the straight the two were neck and neck, and it was only by a head that La Reina finally got the verdict. Elegance was a length away third, while Fuss, the actual favourite, finished a poor fifth. The concluding race (Welter Handicap) was contested by eight horses, of which Duma was the best fancied. Again the favourite was vanquished. Spectre, who has not been a very trustworthy performer under silk, won rather easily, although Aristocrat, the biggest outsider, ran a good race and was only beaten in the last furlong. Admiral Soult was third. The results are as follows: —
