VICE-ADMIRAL’S GREAT WIN-

NYLAND WINS THE STEWARDS’.

Despite dull weather there was a large attendance at Riccarton for the opening day of the New Zealand Cup meeting. There was a heavy shower just before the Stewards’ Handicap. The racing was of a very interesting order, and in the hurdle race Espartero established a Dominion record by covering the two miles in 3min 43 2-ssec. Twenty-nine horses started in the Stewards’, which also is a record field. The results were as follows: — THE SPRING HURDLE HANDICAP of 250sovs. Two miles. 4— J. Coming into the straight Projectile was still in the van, but half way down iMartine went to the front with Mernvonia, Domino and Vice-Admiral putting in their claims. At the distance the last-named was ahead, when Miscount put in a .strong challenge, but was beaten at the post by half a length. Autumnus was the first to break the line and at the distance was a length ahead of Beldame, and the two fought a ding-dong race to the post, when Winning- Way came with a brilliant run and snatched a victory by half a head, while only a head divided Beldame and Autumnus. Lady Georgia was fourth. Time, 49sec.

Jones). There was a long delay at the start, due chiefly to the fractiousness of Turbine and Full Rate. Just before the start Dazzling fell and lost her rider. Eventually the field got away to a good start. When they had gone two furlongs Gipsy Belle was in front, followed by Bliss, Peirene and Nyland, who, in turn were well clear of the next division. When they reached the course proper Bliss, Peirene and Nyland were in charge, just in front of a big bunch. At the distance Nyland drew away, and though Peirene finished well, Nyland held his own, and won by a length and a-half.
