THE DEBT COLLECTOR.
“I am a mild man,” said the visitor, taking a firmer hold on the stick he carried, “but unless I get some money to soothe my feelings there’ll be trouble!”
“Was the boy bitten so very badly by my dog?” inquired the dog’s owner-
“He was bitten exactly 10s 6d worth, sir,” said the man with the stick.
“I hope your boy will soon get well,” remarked the dog’s owner as he paid over the half-guinea. “He isn’t my boy,” said the man, preparing to depart. “What?”
“He is the son of a friend of mine who owes me half-a-guinea, and as
he couldn’t pay me he turned his son’s bite over to me to see if I could collect that. I have done so. If ever you or any of your family get bitten by a dog, just come to me, and I’ll collect the damages for you on 25 per cent, •commission. Good-day!”
