HAWKE’S BAY J.C. MEETING. KARAMU HORSES IN FORM. For the opening day of the Hawke’s Bay Jockey Club’s spring meeting the weather was fine. The attendance was fair. The totalisator investments amounted to £10,267. Results: TOMOANA HACK HURDLES of lOOsovs. One mile and three-quarters. 1— w J. Douglas’ Espartero, by Torpedo—Espaniola, 12.1 (J. O’Connell) 1 5— Polynices, 9.2 (F. Hutchison) 2 2— Morecambe, 10.11 (C. Cress) • • • 3 Also started: 4 Donzel 10.3, 6 Cullinan 10.0, 3 Scots Fusilier 9.5, 7 Castleside 9.0. At the entrance to the straight Esipartero and Polynices were on even terms. ,A good race home resulted in favour of Espartero by a neck. Time. 3min 20sec. Cullinan lost his rider at the back of the course, and Scots Fusilier broke a fetlock and had to be destroyed. MAIDEN HACK RACE of lOOsovs. Seven furlongs. 1— J. D. Ormond’s Outward, by Birkenhead—Outer, 7.2 1 2— Ovation, 7.7 (J. Conquest)7 £ 6— Loch Mabin, 7.13 (T. In a good finish Outward won by a length. Loch Mabin came through at the finish, and beat Esmeh for third place. Time, Imin 28sec. Oliver) 3 Also started: 4 Peacemaker 9.0, 1 Vega 8.4, 6 Mangaroa 7.5. A great race home resulted m Meremere gaining the verdict by inches. Gold Circle was a neck in front of San Pluie. There were, eight starters and the race was won by a length and a-half in 2min 41%sec.' A.J.C. SPRING MEETING. LADY MEDALLIST WINS CRAVEN PLATE. The third day of the Australian Jockey Club’s spring meeting took place on Wednesday last in fine weather. The following were the results:— SECOND HURDLE 1 RACE. About two miles and a-half. Jules, by Orzil —Zitella, 10.9 1 Ennisbelle, 12.13 2 Fiddlestring, 10.6 3 Time. 4min 45%sec. CRAVEN PLATE. One mile and aquarter. Lady Medallist, by St. Alwynne—Diploma, syrs. 8.13 (W. Barnett) 1 Malt King, 9.4 (W. Black) 2 Aurofodina, 9.0 (W. H. Smith) 3 Eleven started. At the six furlongs Cisco and Respect were a length clear of Beverage, with Aurofodina, Comedy King, Malt King, Los Angelos and Lady Medallist in that order. There was little change at the half-mile, except that Beverage ran into second, and Malt King into third place. Aurofodina showed the way round the bend and well into the straight from Cisco, Beverage, Comedy King and Lady Medallist. Below the Leger stand Lady Medallist put in her claim, and, getting a clear run on the rails, landed a clever victory by half a length, with Aurofodina a length away third. Los Angelos finished in the ruck. Time, 2min 6% sec. SUBURBAN HANDICAP. One mile. Lager, by Maltster —Egale, 8.1 1 Kuringai, 8.4 2 Bandon Lad, 8.0 3 There were sixteen starters. Blairgour and Volsloane together made the running until well into the straight. The placed horses got together after the distance had (been passed, and in a good finish Lager won by a neck, with a length between second and third. Time, Imin 38% sec. GRANTHAM STAKES. For three-year-olds. One mile. Ladies’ Man, by Simmer—Saida, 8.7 ... 1 Popinjay, 8.7 2 St. Medoc, 8.4 3 There were nine starters, including Peirene. The winner came with a rush at the Leger. and won by a head. Time, Imin 40% sec. GIMCRACK STAKES. Four furlongs and a-half. Ventura, by Traquair—Sonoma, 8.9 (W. H. McLachlan) • 1 Simmereen, 7.9 2 Aurifer, 8.0 3 There were twenty-six starters. Ventura, almost immediately took charge. She led round the bend into the straight, and, being well ridden by McLachlan, was never overhauled. She won by two lengths. Time, 54% sec. SYDNEY HANDICAP. One mile and a-half. Colma, by San Francisco—Miss Trenton, 6.13 1 Woad. 7.8 2 Duke Foote, 10.0 ............. 3 Eleven starters. A good finish. Won by a neck. Time. 2min 34%sec. SUCCESS OF NEW ZEALAND ’CHASER. The concluding day of the Australian Jockey Club’s spring meeting took place at Randwick last Saturday. The weather was fine and warm. Results:—
HIGHWETGHT HANDICAP. Six ...furlongs. Blast, by Machine Gun—-Mineral, 4yrs, 9.13 1 Lady Owen, 8.12 2 Barley Water, 9.2 3 Eighteen started, including Sharpshooter. Won by a length and a-half, with a length between second and third. Time, Imin 13 3-ssec. WAVERUBY HANDICAP. One mile and a-quarter. Sandbath (imp.) by Blacksand-Tir-nova, 6yrs, 7.8 1 Mutilator, 7.0 * King Bee, 77.5 3 'Eleven started. Won by four lengths, with a neck between second and third. Time, 3min l%sec. DOWLING STEEPLECHASE. About Three miles. Hautapu, by Mitiora —Lady Sarah, aged 11.0 I Loch Fyne, 11.0 “ Leah Kleshna, 11.6 • • 3 Minore, the only other starter, fell, and Leah Kleshna ran off at one of the fences Hautapu led all the way, ana won by half a furlong, with the same distance between second and third. Time, 6min 50%sec. MEMBERS’ HANDICAP. One mile and a furlong. St. Medoc, by St. 3yrs, 7 12 1 Wilari, 8.2 % Malheur, 7.10 ■ ■ •••• •• • • • * Thirteen horses started. Won by a length and a-half, with half _ a length between second and third. Time, Imm 55sec. RANDWICK PLATE. Two miles. Trafalgar, by Wallace —Grand Canary, 6yrs, 9.7 (W. H. Smith) 1 Cadonia, 9.0 (Pike)- o Bridge, 9.3 (W. H. McLachlan) 3 Eight started. Trafalgar took command at the oaoK of the course, and at the h.alf-mile post he led by a good length from Bridge and Posadas. He galloped into the straight two lengths ahead of Bridge and Cadonia. The last-named then spurted, but was unable to catch Trafalgar, who won a splendid race by a length and a-half. Bridge was five lengths further back third. Time, 3min 27-sec. FINAL HANDICAP. One mile and aquarter.
Kuringai, by Flavus-Velox, syrs, 8.4 1 Son of the Marsh (imp.), 9.5 3 Fifteen started, including Sharpshoter. Won by a head, with half a length between second and third. Time, 2min 6sec.
