WELLINGTON, August 21., Training matters at Trentham and the Hutt are beginning to assume a busy aspect. Horses trained in these parts are expected to play a prominent part in the decision of this season’s racing events. F. J. Carmont will be represented at the, Marton meeting with Sir Frisco and St. Bee’s. The pair should be well forward by the time that gathering comes up for decision. J. Sullivan the Ashurst trainer, is busy with . Waipunui, who appears likely to prove a winner ere the. Season is much advanced. The gelding will be a competitor at Marton. Leolanter has made a capital recovery from the mishap that befell him at Hastings. The chestnut is a regular attendant on the Awapuni tracks, and will in all probability be given a run at the Marton meeting. The Strowan —Miss Riwaka filly, Velox, is pleasing J. Hathaway by the manner in which she finishes up her daily tasks at Awapuni. The youngster, who is owned by a popular Palmerston North boniface, gives promise of turning out decidedly useful. Mr W. E. Bidwill’s (the Wairarapa

sportsman) many friends will be glad to hear that he has recovered from his recent indisposition, and is now quite well again. . ; Eureka, the full-brother to Brown Trout, is furnishing into a fine tpye of h galloper. His education is being attended to by W. Bromley, at Lulls.

Ballarat, who ran with some success on the turf recently, gave birth to a filly foal, by Advance, at Mr D. Fraser’s farm, at Pukehou. The Sir Laddo colt Sir Knox, continues to gallop in ah attractive style on the Opaki tracks. The youngster is a promising sort, and was evidenced by his acting as runner up to Ains dale in the Trial Plate at the recent W.R.C. meeting. Lady Volley has resumed work at Trentham, under her owner’s (J. Cress’) guidance. The chestnut has wintered well, and all going well in the interim, she will sport silk at the Otaki meeting. Hill Lass and Oakley will represent Mr C. F. Vallance in hunting events at the Marton meeting. The former gave a bold showing at the recent C.J.C. gathering, but Oakley’s display was distinctly disappointing. Merrivonia is getting through some satisfactory work under J. Ay re’s tuition at Trentham. This black daughter of Merriwee has many admirers for the big Riccarton event in November next.

The Rover, who appears to bear no ill effects from his exertions at Riccarton, is a daily attendant on the Foxton tracks. The gelding will probably compete at the Marton meeting. Mr Whitney has cancelled his intended visit to the Ashburton meeting with Odessa and Ahuapai, and the pair have returned home. The latter will represent the local sportsman at the Marton meeting. The Porirua stable, which has been completely out of luck for some time past, is represented by Hawick, Te Kahurangi, St. Petersburg, Varna, Ribstone Pippin, and Kina at the Marton meeting. The horses named are all well forward, but their displays re cently, with the exception of Hawick, have been very inferior. Mr R. W. Paterson’s mare, Mon Ami and his three-year-old filly by The from Laurestina, have left C. Pritchard’s Hutt stable. The pair are now being trained by Fred Tilley, at Fordell.

Kilosteri and Bronze, two members of the Highden stable, at Awapuni are reported in capital racing trim. The pair are destined to assist at Marton next month.

W. Young and L. Traill will be associated with the riding of the Porirua stable this season. With such a pair of capable pilots there should be nothing lost on the score of horseman ship.

The Elevation—Sunfish youngster in J. Cress’ Trentham stable, is being kept going. The juvenile appears to be the makings of a good sort.

The Southern rider Jas. Pine will do the riding for J. W. Lowe’s Trentham stable during the absence of W. Ryan in Australia. Pine rode Effort when the chestnut scored on the final day of the Grand National meeting.
