, FIRST,. DAY., PARITUTU WINs'.THE STEEPLECHASE. - • The Canterbury Jockey Club’s'Grand 'National meeting opened on!’ Tuesday, attracting a vast attendance. Amongst Jthe visitors were tihe Governor, .Lord Islington and his staff and representative racing men from, all parts of the Dominion. The results were as follows: — HUNTERS’ HURDLE HANDICAP of 130sovs. Once round and a distance Mr. J. G. Wilson’s br g Hawick, aged, by 'Phaeton—Hempie, 11.1 (Hill) ... 1 Mr. iC. F. Master Webb 10.4, Miharo 10.2, Wirihana 10.0. Myall and Nedra led past the stand and out of the straight, but at the mile post the latter had drawn clear. Hawick then supplanted Myall and rounding the top turn drew level with Nedra. Hawick was first over the last hurdle, and easily holding his advantage, won by two lengths and a-half. Simon Pure was two lengths further back third, with Sylvia Maid next. Mauri, Miharo and Myall fell. Time. 3min 10 l-ssec. TRIAL HURDLE HANDICAP of 200 sovsi. One mile and three-quarters. Mr. W. C. Dogger Bank and Cardiff showed the_ wav out of the straight, followed by St. Aidan and Passive. Going along the back Cardiff took charge, but he and Dogger Bank were beaten as they turned into the straight, where St. Aidan and Passive closed on them. The latter pair took the last hurdle on terms, but in the run home Passive drew away and won by a length. Cardiff was four lengths back third, with Dogger Bank fourth. Time, 3min 23 VI sec. JUMPERS’ FLAT RACE of 150sovs. One mile and a-half. Mr. A. R. Maltley's b g Gaelic, aged, toy Bonny Scotland—JSt. Leger mare. 9.0 (Price) 1 Mr. T. Lett’s br g Embrasure, aged, 9.0 (Lloyd) 2 Mr J. Casserley’s b g Compass, aged, 11.2 (T. Pine) 3 Also started: The Native 11.1. Master Paul 10.0 Kildonan 9.13, Windage 9.3, Milo 9.0. ■Master Paul at once rushed to the front, and going along the back had a lead of 10 lengths from Embrasure and Windage. Before the turn into the straight was reached Master Paul was done with and dropped right back. Halfway down the straight Gaelic and Embrasure drew out, and in a good finish the former won by a head. Cochrane) ... 0 The Gunner. 9.7 (Z. Coleman) 0 Passing the stand the order of the leaders was True Blue, Lovell, Paritutu and The Gunner. The first fence of the stand double, however, brought True Blue down, and The Gunner took charge, followed by Paritutu and Lovell, Dorando and Antarctic. Going along the back Antarctic ran to the front, and at the kennels double he was showing the way to Paritutu and Corazon. As they ran through Antarctic was out by himself in front, and then came The Gunner, Paritutu,* Corazon and Dorando. Winiata fell at the second of the stand double, while the sod wall brought down Dorando. Turning for home Corazon and Paritutu closed on Antarctic, who had lost ground by a faulty jump near the six furlong post. Corazon landed over the last fence clear of Paritutu. but the latter put in a great run over the final stages and won by a head. Antarctic was two lengths further back third, followed by Red McGregor. The Gunner. Le Beau and Eurus. Time. 7min 12 4-ssec.

TALLY-HO STEEPLECHASE of lOOsovs, Two miles and a-half. Mr C. F. Vallance’s b m Hill Lass, aged, by Chief Commander—Pride of the Hills. 12.10 (.Mr. G. Hirst) ... 1 Mr. Hl. Wimbldborne’s ch g Silver Blaze, syrs, 12.7 (Mr. W. J. Cowie) - Mr H. J. Cameron’s b g Glenmore. aged, 12.10 (Mr. C. D. Campion) ... .» .Also started: Uncle Tom 12.10, Matai 12.10, ' IWalit-a-Bi t 12.10. Flamlnga 12.10. Kingsway 12.10. Kildare 12.10. Hill Lass was In a handy position (throughout, and turning for home ran to tiliO front and won easily by four lengths from Flamingo, who finished 12 lengths in front of' Silver Blaze. Odessa was then at the head of affairs, but Undecided threw out a strong challenge and won a good race by half a length, with Bonny Glen a neck away third.
