SEASON OPENED IN WANGANUI.
(From Our Own Correspondent.) The local football season was opened jon Saturday with aseven-a-Side tourney, which was lairly successful, though there was nothing very brilliant about the play. However, it was not anticipated that the players would show much form so early in the season. Still, from what was seen it is sate to say that there should be some interesting contests before the Cup is decided, as three or four of the teams are likeiy to be very even. It was thought that the Pirates would be very weak this year, owing to nearly all of their senior team having gone over to the Northern Union game, but it was made plain on Saturday that the blacks nave a good side to battle for them again. Their team won the final of the tourney, beating the Wanganui seven in capital style. The result was a boil over, as the Wanganui team was a very hot one on paper, and their supporters were very confident. Eastern shaped well, and this young club , will have to be reckoned with in all the grades. The Old Boys are hopeful of making a bold bid for championship honours, but. at present the prospects of Kaierau are not very rosy. Tins team generally does best when least expected, hence, always have to be reckoned with. The Cup contests start next Saturday. a • « * Hampered by want of forwards the Northern Union players are not making the headway some anticipated. If they do succeed in getting a ground in a central position, it is quite on the cards that the game will take on.
