THE PRINCE’S RINK.

THE CORONATION BAZAAR. A BIG SUCCESS. Prince’s Rink buildings, in Victoriastreet is the scene of a brilliant spectacle just now, a “ Coronation” Bazaar being, held in. aid of the Mater Miseri-

cordia Hospital. The opening' ceremony took place on Saturday afternoon by His Excellency the Governor, Lord Islington. Lady Islington was also present, their Excellencies being greeted by his Lordship, Bishop Cleary. A guard of honour was formed by the Sacred Heart College, cadets. The Mayor, Mr- L. J. Bagnall, was also present, together with a number of representative citizens. His Excellency, after a few words of welcome by Bishop Cleary, spoke cf the pleasure with which he and Lady Islington had accepted the invi-. tation accorded them by the committee to lend assistance to a movement that was worthy of all encouragement and of all the support that

one could give it . (Applause). The hospital boasted a long and honourable record in the Catholic anna’s of Auckland. Its institution dated back to the first Bishop of Auckland, to the early fiays of settlement in New The present hospital was established ten years ago, but it was inadequate to cope with the increasing demands made upon it. It was desired to erect a new and up-to-date buildii|g, fitted with all modern hospital appliances to enable the Sisters to carry on their good work. His Excellency, after pointing out that the hospital would be open to sufferers of all denominations, made n . strong appeal for public support to the bazaar, its object being one which

would prove of benefit to Auckland in general. The Mayor (Mr. L. J. Bagnall), in asking for the sympathies of all, referred to. the value of the Mater Misericordia Hospital. It treated many cases which could not go to the general hospital, and there was ample room for it in the city. The good sisters were doing an estimable work and had earned an everlasting debt of gratitude from those who had been objects of their care and attention. Dr. Tracy Inglis (vice-president of the British Medical Association), DrLowe, Mr. A. M. Myers, M.P., and Mr. J. J. O’Brien (chairman of the committee) also spoke in similar strain. The decorations are on a lavish scale and have evoked much admiration, the completeness of the whole arrangements being a tribute to the skill and energy of the committee, of which Mr. H. C. McCoy and Mr. T. J. Holbrook are the joint secretaries, and who are proving indefatigable in their multifarious duties- Every afternoon and evening there is some special attraction, the spectacular display at night afforded by the myriads of electric lights and the fancy costumes of the stall holders being strikingly effective. From this point of view alone it is well worth a visit. Following are the stall-holders: — Ireland (Irish costumes), Miss C. McIlhone and Mrs. W. Mahoney, with 22 assistants; Fry’s cocoa stall, Mrs. Duff; doctor’s stall, Mrs. Bedford, assisted by Mesdames Pabst, De Clive Lowe, Purchas, Ferguson, Aubin and Stride, and a number of young ladies; Italy (Italian costumes), Mesdames Edwards and O’Sullivan and 16 assistants; America (American costumes), Mesdames W. J. Ralph and V. P. Casey and 37 assistants; New Zealand (New Zealand fern), Mrs. Fernandez and Miss A. Lonergan and 31 assistants; Ye Old English stall (Old English costumes), Mesdames O’Brien, Napier and Wright, and 18 assistants. The bazaar will be open until further notice.
