CRICKET.

The eighth round of the Auckland Cricket Association’s district championship matches was commenced on Saturday under unfavourable weather conditions, the light being had as a result of the cloudy sky and smoke from -bush fires, while light showers of rain fell. Nevertheless some fine batting performances were registered, the Parnell trio, A. Andreae (68), A. Anthony (61) and A. Jones (63) being in excellent, form, while for G'rafton E. Horspool made 83, D. Hay 73 and F. R. Mason 60. The Ponsonby batsman, F. A. Pearson put together 53 runs. Graham, of University, was the most successful of the bowlers, taking five wickets for 47 runs, while A. M. Howden, (Noi'th Shore), took five for 83, Dr. Howden (North Shore) four for 46, and BrookeSmith (Eden) four for 63. The Grafton-Eden match was played at Eden Park, the Graftonites being responsible for a creditable first innings, which occupied the whole of the afternoon. The Parnell eleven were pitted against University at the Domain, and batting first, they kept the students busily enployed fielding throughout the afternoon, their total reaching a substantial fig--1 ure. At Devonport the North Shore team were pitted against Ponsonby, and the latter gave a moderate display, the bowling of the Howden Bros, proving very effective, while the local men made a good start with their first innings. FIRST GRADE, Grafton v. Eden.—The Graftonites batted first, and with D. Hay, F. R. Mason and E. Horspool playing right up to concert pitch, they put together the nice total of 309 runs (D. Hay 73, E. Horspool 81, R. Neil 20, F. Shacklock 21). Bowling for Eden, Brooke-Smith took four wickets for 63 runs, Taylor three for 46, Gordon one for 35, Ward one for 44 and Cummings one for 32. Parnell v. University.—The Parnell men won the toss, and decided to bat first. Andreae and Wright opened play for the Parnellites and altogether the substantial total of 304 was compiled (A. Andreae 68, H. Wright 26, A. Anthony 61, E. V. Sale 13, A. Jones 63, H. Caro 16, A. Fairburn 15). For University, Wallace took three wickets for 51, Taylor one for 72, Graham five for 47, and Jacobsen one for 3. Ponsonby v. North Shore. —The Ponsonby team (playing one man ■short) took their stand at the wickets, but made a poor showing, their score only amounting to 134 runs (F. A. Pearson 53, N. C. Snedden 23, F. R. Wilson 17, V. C. Kavanagh 21, J. W. Gavin 11). For North Shore, A. M. Howden took five wickets for 83 runs, and Dr. Howden four for 46. North Shore then went to the wickets, and put together 121 runs for the loss of eight wickets (A. Hadden 28, W. E. Bush 40, A. M. Howden 16, J. A. Kallendar 12). For Ponsonby Kavanagh took one wicket for 8 runs, N. C. Snedden four for 62 and Pearson two for 42. SECOND GRADE. Parnell v. Eden A.—Parnell, first Innings, 130 (J. Sale 30 not out, C. Resteaux 13, D. Dufaur 13, E. Foster 12, R. Bevins 14, P. C. Rose 11). For Eden, G. Alexander took two wickets for 16 runs, A. O. Horspool four for 84 and Gilmore two for 16. Eden A, first innings, 108 (G. Alexander 11, J.. Alexander 43, W. Francis 15, A. O. Horspool 12). For Parnell R. Doble took six wickets for 48 runs, C. Resteaux two for 25 and D. Dufaur two for 11. Wait e mata v. Eden B.— Waitemata, first innings, 205 (C. Moller 12. Young 44, K. Moller 13, Mayall 33, Riddell 31 not out, Steele 13, Hurley 19). For Eden, Hobson took three wickets for 53, Robinson two for 46, Freeman two for 35, Clark one for 22 and Buckland two for 8. Eden, -first innings, 32 for three wickets (A. Brown 21)..

Ponsonby v. „ Grafton. —Ponsonby, first innings, 141 (Cheshire 16, Comber 32, Magee 22, F. Cullimore 35 not out, Crawford 10). For Grafton, Jack took three wickets for 36 runs, Cossey

three for 24, Hill one for 20, and Rev. Reeve one for 13. Grafton, first innings, 133 for five wickets (W. Horspool 53, Campbell 22, Rev. Reeve 23, H. D. Hill 21 not out). For Ponsonby Barr-Brown took three wickets for 46 runs and Cullimore one for 20. THIRD GRADE. SECTION A. . ' Eden A v. Parnell.— Eden, first innings 92 (O. Eyre 17, A. E. Freeman 10, H. Hickman 12, R. O. Butler 21, A. Jenkins 23). For Parnell, H. Turfoott took six wickets for 45 runs, and R. Dingle one for 2. Parnell, first innings 127 (Sale 10, Clark 61, J. Brown 32). For Eden, Eyre took three wickets for 27 runs, and Carr five for 27. Grafton v. Ponsonby.—Grafton, ‘first innings, 93 (Yates 20, Rutherford 18, Lepine 15, Foreman 13 not out, Baker 13); second innings, 56 for three wickets (O’Shea 18, Lepine 13, Rutherford 14 not out). North Shore v. University.—University defaulting, North Shore were awarded a three-point win. Ed«n B v. Waitemata. —Eden B, first innings, 312 (R. Hamilton 17, R. Bennett 50. W. Smeeton 18. E. Heighway 22, A. Player 22, R. Burton 74, L. Bennett 67, M. Alexander 28 not out). For Waitemata, Grade took Three Wickets’ for 38 runs, Smith five for 94, A. G. Clow one for 46 and Metge one for 27.

Eden D v. Parnell.—Eden, first innings (four men short), 11. For Parnell, S. Caro took ’ three wickets for 7 runs and R- Williams three for 2. Eden, second innings 57 (Martin 10, Wheeler 11, Hebden 12 not out,

Nixon 12). For Parnell, R. Campbell took one wicket for 9 runs, S. Caro three for 14, W. Barnes one for 10, and J. Williams one for 5. Parnell, first innings, 95 (R. Williams 13, J. Williams 22, C. Venimore 11 not’ out). For Eden Cotton took five wickets for 29 runs, and Hebden four for 50. Parnell thus won by an innings and 27 runs—a three- > point win.
