having supplied liquor to such a person. For the defence, Mr Steadman quoted two decisions of Justice Edwards regarding similar cases, with the purpose of showing that the landlord had no opportunity of disallowing the liquor being supplied, as he was not present at the time at all. Mr Steadman said that he would ask for a decision as to whether there was any charge against the landlord. As regards James Gibson, counsel contended that the barman was not to blame as he could not know the boy’s age, and also had not seen the boy on the night in question. By his appearance the boy was apparently more than 18 years of age. After quoting various authorities bearing on the same point, counsel asked that the information be dismissed. Both cases were dismissed, as were also similar ones against Samuel McMahon, licensee of the Whangarei Hotel, and George Martin, barman. * * * * At Ashburton, on Saturday, a man fciatmed |Thomas Henry Alexander, was fined £5O for keeping liquor for sale in a no-license district. The police on Saturday raided a boarding-house at Waihi, when seven men were found drinking in a bedroom, where /a five-gallon keg of beer was on tap, whilst in another room a partly-consumed case of liquor and a number of empty bottles were found. Bottles of beer and glasses were discovered in a second bedroom, and a five-gallon keg of beer in the yard, whither it is supposed the keg was carried from the building when the police entered. The liquor was seized and taken to the police station, and it is understood that informations alleging breaches of the Licensing Act will be preferred at the next sitting of the Magistrate’s Court. * « ♦ * Those visiting the Thames will find Mrs Christensen back in the Pacific Hotel.
