CANTERBURY.

(From Our Own Correspondent.)

CHRISTCHURCH, October 4.

Danube was made /a strong order in Christchurch for the Wanganui Guineas, being backed as though he could not lose the race.

Ingoda is bowling along nicely at Riccarton, and I should say is an almost certain starter in the N-Z. Cup. I have always put this mare down as really a good one, and will venture the opinion that she will run out two miles to the bitter end-

Martist, the three-year-old colt by Martian, is pleasing onlookers at Riccarton, and if he trains on should give a good account of himself this season. He is being trained with a view to starting in the N.Z. Cup. Los Angelos continues to do good work on the tracks. Although he has been entered for some of the short races at the Cup meeting, the work he is doing suggests that the Cup will be his mission. Cronstadt, the full brother to All Red, ran badly at Geraldine. He seems to be an in-and-out customer on recent form-

Grand Slam, Lovelorn, Cronstadt and Nightlight can be written out of the New Zealand CupTikitere met with a slight mishap a few days ago, and has had to be eased in her work- This mare is well forward, but to-day I do not like her prospects in a race like the cup. Snip has joined the active brigade once more, Mr. Morphan having charge of him. Prior to this year R. J. Mason had not trained the winner of the Wanganui Guineas. Danube has started his three-year-old career auspiciously- He created a fresh record for the Guineas, beating Achilles’ time.

Master Paul struck himself the other day, and will not be able to make the journey to Dunedin. Rose Noble is in capital fettle just now. He has won the principal handicaps at Ashburton and Geraldine, and if he retains his form should win a big race in much better company shortly. There are fifty-eight nominations for the Stewards’ Handicap run on the same day as the New Zealand Cup.

There will be racing at Rangiora this week. Nightlight is the only Cup candidate engaged at the gathering.
