CYCLING AND MOTOR NOTES.

The, date of the South Australian TeSt Race to select the South Australian representative for the big Dunlop Road Race from Warrnambool to Melbourne has been fixed for Saturday, September 17th. The event is being held under the auspices of the Norwood Cycling Club, over a course from Gladstone to Adelaide, a distance of 125 miles. Prizes to the value of £BO have been denoted for the event, which promises to be the most important event held in South Australia.

A fine prize list, totalling £lBO, has been arranged for the New Zealand Timaru-Christchurch Road Race, which is to be held on Saturday, September 3rd., thus allowing ample time for the New Zealand representative to arrive in Australia to compete in both the “Goulburn” and “Warrnambool” events. According to reports from New Zealand, a strong contingent is coming across this year for the Dunlop races, with a view of repeating the performances of J. Arnst, A. Ralston and other New Zealand road cracks who have ridden with conspicuous success in these events.

A recent very fine motor cycle record from John O’Groats to Land’s End (one end of England to the other) by a motor cyclist named H. Gibson, with a passenger in a side carriage, draws attention to the possibilities of this cheap and effective means of getting about on good roads. Gibson, who drove a 3 % h.p. Triumph, covered the full trip (almost 900 miles) in the remarkable time of 40 hours. 45mins., despite the fact that he was not favoured by the best of weather. To propel a heavy weight motor cycle and rider this distance in the time given would in itself be a particularly fine performance, but the fact of also drawing a sfde carriage and an 8-stone passenger speaks volumes for the efficiency of the engine used. So far the side carriage has not become very popular in England, nor in this country, but for a , cheap, safe and speedy means of getting about the country, especially for a lady passenger the side carriage attachment to a powerful motor cycle offers many attractions.
