CANTERBURY.
(From Our Own Correspondent.) CHRISTCHURCH, July 26. Wimmera is now one of the favourites for the Winter Cup. It is reported that after running in this event the son of Merriwee will be specially trained for the New Zealand Cup. Mr. G. D. Greenwood has scratched all his horses for the A.J.C. Spring meeting, but quite a strong contingent will be seen out at the Cup meeting in November. Outlander was scratched for the Grand National Hurdle race at 9-40. a.m. on Thursday last. King Hippo was scratched for all engagements at the National meeting at 2.35 p.m. on Monday.
Paragon, who broke dlown .badly while doing a gaLop on Saturday week had to be destroyed a day or two later. The horse had been galloping very well and showing great promise, his owner having every confidence that he would win a race before the season closed. Mahuta, who was one of the fancied horses for the Grand National Hurdle race has gone out of favour for the big jumping event, since his poor dispmy at the Wellington meeting.
vv hite Cockade and Inchbonny were the only members of the Canterbury contingent to win races at the Wellington meeting. The former has come into favour for the Grand National Hurdies since his fine showing at Ashburton and Wellington. Te Arai, the favourite for the Grand National Steeplechase, Tyrannic and several other horses that competed at the Wellington meeting have arrived at Riccarton for the National meeting.
master Paul, who won on the second day at Wellington cost the local ring a iot of money, all shrewd backers getting on to the good thing. Paisano was a strong favourite for the National Hurdles prior to winning at Trentham, but since his brilliant displays on the northern course shrewed judges have sorted him out as having a second to none chance in the National Hurdies.
Lock Fyne, Red McGregor and Le Beau, have arrived at xviccarton and are undergoing their final preparation for the Grand National Steeplechase.
circus Girl, who recently arrived from Marlborough district to take pait in some of the jumping contests at the National meeting is doing good work over the steeplechase country. This mare strikes me as being an accomplished jumper.
Shindy went wrong while doing a ga.lop at Riccarton last week and it is not likely she will be able to race again.
Perla_p’or, who claims engagements at the National meeting, Lady Reina and Directoire were doing easy work at Riccarton, Mason being in charge of them.
