WELLINGTON RACING CLUB’S WINTER MEETING. PAISANO WINS THE WINTER HURDLES. BOLLIN THE PARLIAMENTARY HANDICAP. The Wellington Racing Club inaugurated the winter meeting of the Club at Trentham on Saturday in the presence of a large attendance. The day itself was fine, but the tracks, consequent upon the heavy rain of the previous couple of days, were very heavy. Amongst those present was the Governor, Lord Islington and staff, and they made their acquaintance with racing in New Zealand. The racing was by no means uninteresting, and was not marred in any way by accident, there being only one fall during the afternoon, and that had no serious consequences. The most remarkable feature of the racing was the complete rout of the local horses, the visitors making a clean sweep of everything. Some of the finishes Were very close, Mr. W. H. Hartgill, the judge, having one or two near things to decide. Mr. C. O’Connor was in his customary good form at the starting barrier. the dispatches being remarkably even all through. Betting was fairly brisk both at the totalisator and with the bookmakers. The sum of £11,051 was handled at the windows, as against £9904 on the corresponding day last year. Thirty-one bookmakers were operating, twelve inside and nineteen out, their fees amounting to £445 10s. Results:— STEWARDS' HANDICAP. Seven furlongs. 1 — R. E.
