WANGANUI.

(From Our Own Correspondent.) WANGANUI, July 18. I learn from M. Gardiner that he intends leaving for Sydney in about a week’s time, taking Crucinella, a three-year-old Handsome Jack colt and Koran (if the latter continues to gallop in the same way as he has been doing lately). Crucinella is moving along very nicely, while the colt is also shaping well. As for Koran, he gives promise of being better than ever when next he faces the starter, and it is quite on the cards that he will more than pay his way if taken to Australia.

The Feilding Club’s annual report shows that the year just ended was a successful one financially, the net profit totalling £407, . after paying the large increase in Government taxation amounting to £914. The totalisator

investments were considerably better than the previous year, although the amount was far below what it was two or three years ago.

In moving the adoption of the report at the meeting, which was held on Friday evening, the chairman (Mr. W. A. L. Bailey) said that the club had had a successful year. Still, things were not too hopeful. He did not think the totalisator would be wiped out this session—if it were, it would be ruination to all the racing clubs. The Feilding Club, however, was in the happy position that, if the totalisator were wiped ont, they would not have to come on the shareholders.

The Marton Jockey Club’s course has been much improved since last meeting and it is now in really firstclass order, so that owners will have no cause for complaint in this direction. The meeting to be held on the 7th and Sth September promises well and some excellent racing should be witnessed for the valuable stake money offered at this country gathering. The big money on the first day, the Marton Handicap, is worth £175, and the Crofton Handicap, on the second day, £l5O. Owners should bear in mind that the alteration in the conditions attached to the New Zealand Cup will allow of any horse winning either of the Marton races escaping a penalty. In addition to the big handicaps the Club are giving £lOO in each case for the Shorts Handicap (first day) and the Telegraph Handicap (second day), and these events should attract most of the best handicap sprinters. Nominations close on Friday, 19th August, with the secretary (Mr. A. Way). Tiptoe was expected to run a big race in the Parliamentary Handicap, but the heavy going was against such a long striding gelding. He had done excellent work before leaving Hawera, and is in good form, so that he might pick up a race before the meeting ends.
