£l000 FOR PONIES.
ASCOT (MELBOURNE) “HEIGHT CLASS.” Late nominations for the Ascot (Melbourne) Racing Club’s classic pony race for £lOOO, to be run on Ist September, will close with the secretary, Mr. A- J. Gray, 197, Bourkestreet, Melbourne, on 9th August, full particulars as to fees, etc., being set forth in an advertisement in the present issues- The race will be over a distance of five furlongs, and the contestants will be ponies 14.1 and 14.2 and under. Height certificates must be produced before ponies can start.
The Ascot racecourse is an ideal one for such an event as this, the track being in perfect condition in every respect. Ponies taking part in this great classic for miniature racehorses acquire an added value by the very fact of competing in such a race, while it is notable that the bay filly Balgonie, 3yrs, by Phoebus Apollo — Balbirnie, who won in 1908, was sold after her victory for 1000 guineas to go to India, where she subsequently changed hands for the rupee equivalent of £2OOO, this being about quadruple the price at which she was bought before her great win. The 1909 winner, Acrospire, 3yrs, by Maltster —Loveday, also increased largely in value as the result of her victory.
