WANGANUI JOCKEY CLUB’S WINTER MEETING.

JACK POT WINS THE STEEPLECHASE. WIMMERA THE CENTURY HURDLES. (From Our Own Correspondent) The Wanganui J.C- winter meeting opened on Tuesday in dull weather, with a cold wind, but fortunately rain, which threatened at intervals, held off. The attendance was very large, including visitors from all parts of the Dominion, amongst those present being the Hons. Jas. Carroll and J. D. Ormond. The track was in splendid order, and as the fields were large and of good quality, the racing was full of interest. The excellent management by Secretary Hall and other officials assisted to the general enjoyment of the sport. , Nineteen bookmakers were licensed, eleven inside and eight outside.

all doing good business, while the tote put through £10,906, an increase of £I6BO on last year’s figuresProceedings opened with the Borough Handicap, for which 14 went to the post,. Boanerges being sent out a hot favourite, a position he was fully entitled to on looks, though St. Bill, True Shot and Emblem were also in capital nick- There was a considerable delay at the barrier, and when it rose Te Roti, Kareroa and Ballarat all jumped back and were badly left. St. Bill, Boanerges and True Shot got under way smartest, and raced to the half-distance in that order- Boanerges was in front when fairly in the straight, and though Parula and Emblem made big efforts, had no chance of getting up. St, Bill was fourth, Overtime fifth. The nine which saddled up for the big event, the Wanganui Steeplechase, were eagerly scanned as they paraded in the birdcage. Bullworth appeared particularly fit, but no fault could be found- with the condition of Jack Pot, Lovell, Oryx and Sir Lethe. Eldorado looked well, but short of a gallop ,or two. Lingerer was very fit, while Mocassin was better than when he won last year. Eldorado was made favourite, with Jack Pot next in demand. Wairarapa people thought Sir Lethe could not lose, and put in on him. He started off well and led to the first obstacle, where he put in a big jump and swerved in the air and landed over the fence, and also over the rails on the wrong track, which performance put him out of the contest. Lovell now took command, and soon had a big break from Jack Pot, Bullworth and Eldorado, and much the same order was maintained for half the distance. Pharos bringing up in the. rear. A mile from home Lovell was still in front, followed by Jack'Pot, who was going well, with Lingerer third, Bullworth’s saddle having slipped, while went wrong and was pulled up. J ack Pot was level with Lovell half-a-mile from home, but the Porirua-trained one cleared, the. double best and went on again,' while Oryx was making a forward move from the rear- J ack Pot tackled Lovell once more at the turn into the straight and led over the last obstacle. A-ding-dong battle was then fought .out Lovell heading Jack Pot only .to give way again- Both horses were yery tired and Jack Pot appeared to roll on to Lovell, thus jamming him on the rails. The Chainlink gelding was straightened and going on won 'by two lengths with Oryx, who finished fast, a good third, the same position as he occupied last year- Eldorado was a fair fourth. He jumped well and should be greatly benefited ipy the race. Pharos finished last, broken down. The jumping was good all round, but the obstacles were not so formidable as last year. Bullworth would have been dangerous but for the saddle slipping, his jumping being splendidFanuns had little difficulty m winning, the Electric Handicap from 15 others. Golden Loop was a fair secand ond Voca close up third. The latter had a bad passage. The Kaitoke Hack Hurdles fell to Merry Lawn, who cut down Nightmare at the entrance to the straight and won comfortably in the gooa time of 7.17 2-5- Maharanui, a nor favourite, finished last. Pikopo shaped well and should do better soon. The Century Hurdles proved a soft thing for Wimmera, who was in front all the way jumping well and never giving anything else a chance ;for first place- Audax was a slightly better favourite that Maku. The former got second, but Maku was beaten a long way from, home- Aprangi was prominent until .a quarter of a mile from home where the pace told and he finished fourth, with Woolloomooloo fifth, though: some' of the others could have beaten the latter. In previous years the distance of this race was two miles and a distance whereas this year it was two miles and a; quarter, Wimmera’s time was 4.15, as against 4.3 2-5. last year- Except the last hurdle, which he. struck hard, Wimmera jumped cleanly. .. Audax should do better at Auckland. Seventeen faced the starter in the Connolly,, Handicap r in which Maori King and. Parable (bracketed) carried slightly, more money than Sir Antrim. Penates, was one .of the.. outsiders of the .party- He. ug.ot well away, but gave way to Waipaku, who led to the straight, ; where Clemora came fast, and after a good race with Maori King, got home, by a length.. There was, a lot of bumping through faulty riding ip. this event,,. Wopdhey being one of, tlie worst.. Sufferers. , Waikaraka fell : after, passing the post,, but Sid. Reid’ luckily escaped with a few bruises, and was able to ride in the next, race-

The concluding event was contested' by fifteen, Patrobus carrying most money, with Ambrosian next in demand. The latter got home from Attention, who might have won had she been differently handledThe stewards met to consider a protest of alleged boring of Lovell by Jack Pot, but dismissed the same. Neither Wimmera nor Audax will start on Thursday, when Kiatere will probably compete. The following were the results:— The totalisator passed £10,906 through, as against £9226 on the first day_ last year. Twenty-one bookmakers plied their calling, the club benefiting to the extent of £328 10s. The following are the details of the racing. BOOROUGH HANDICAP of 150sovs. Six furlongs. The field was sent away well, Sir Lethe leading from Lovell, Bullworth, Moccasin and Jack Pot, with Oryx last. Sir Lethe was early out of the race, running through an opening into the inside course a couple of furlongs past the stand. Lovell then went to the front, but the field had closed up when passing the stand. Here Bullworth’s saddle slipped, and though Pine rode gamely on the horse’s loins his chances were spoiled. Oryx, who had been lying fifth or sixth, improved his position, and Moccasin stopped before the back was reached. Going along the back stretch Jack Pot closed up on Lovell, Bullworth lying third and El Dorado fourth, with Oryx handy; Turning for home Jack Pot drew almost level with Lovell, who, however, again led by a couple of lengths just before the straight was reached. An exciting finish then took place. Jack Pot again challenged Lovell, and led him over the hencoop. Lovell was on the rails and appeared unable to get through, Jack -Pot winning by a bare length.
