JACK JOHNSON’S DREAM.
I dreamed a dream de udder night When ebbery ting was still. I thought I saw Jim Jeffries A-comin’ o’er de hill. De snafle-bit was in Jim’s mout’, He look infernal sly. I say “ Jim Jeff you threaten dat You wipe dis nigger’s eye.” Chorus. “ You wipe dis nigger’s eye, Jim Jeff, You wipe dis nigger’s eye. Step in de ring, dear Jeffle And have one leetle try. “ Come, toe the scratch. Jim Jeffries bold, And whether fair or foul, Before you wipe dis nigger’s eye You’ll be a boiled owl. You’ll be a boiled owl, Jim Jeff, And once you face dis coon, “Ten thousand million stars you’ll see, Each star big as de moon. “ You wipe dis nigger’s eye, Jim Jeff,” Etc. Now to the rescue, Kid McCoy, Jeff’s rolling on the sand, Jack’s talismanic influence His necromancer’s wand. ’Twas Johnson’s big black “ bunch o fives” Dat made dey ruby flow, Now larrup him Jack Johnson hard, For Jim’s dis nigger’s foe. “You wipe dis nigger’s eye,” etc. Jim Jeffries looked a sorry sight As Johnson o’er him stood, A-blowin’ like a grampus, Jack Was panting for Jim’s blood. Come, take his mufflers off, McCoy, The tide of battle’s o’er, The mighty Boiler-Maker Jeff Lies weltering in his gore. “You wipe dis nigger’s eye,” etc. O sweep de shambles clean, McGrath, The prize is lost and won, Dis nigga’s champion of de Yanks And of each mudder’s son. Of every mudder’s son, my boy. O smash—O Golly I where am I, Where’s dis tarn nigga. At this point Johnson awakes with a yawn about the width of the Otira tunnel. Kid McCoy is Jeffries’ trainer.
