IN DEFENCE OF BOXING.
During the week a cablegram appeared. in which Sir Robert Perks, addressing the Methodist Social Union in New York, declared that the Jef-fries-Johnson fight would be a disgraceful and brutal orgy. In taking up the cudgels on behalf of boxing a Boston paper says:— “Battling Nelson is in accord with Jimmy Walsh in regard to youths refraining from smoking. There is no getting away from it but when Messrs Walsh and Nelson begin to preach to our juvenile friends they will be heard with more attention than all the ministers in the country. It also goes to show that they are both men, thinking men, not mere fighting machines. They look for the betterment of the boy, not only physically but morally. If more of the boys could be brought into contact with such men they would fare better. No better examples of clean living can be found anywhere than the bantam and lightweight champions.”
