POVERTY BAY TURF CLUB’S SPRING MEETING.

FIRST DAY. The Poverty Bay Turf Club’s Spring Meeting was opened on Thursday in ideal weather, and before a record attendance. The sum of £4863 was put through the totalisator, as against £5103 on the first day last year. Fourteen bookmakers were licensed at £l5 each. The results were:— TRIAL HANDICAP of 50 sovs.; second horse to receive 10 sovs. from stake. For horses that have not won a race of the value of 60 sovs. or upwards Six furlongs. Mr. T. W. Hackett’s b m Sublime, 4 yrs, by Wonderland—Heavenly Twin, 9.0 (S. Reid) : 1 Mr. F. Hall’s b f Masonic, 3 yrs, 7.13 (J. Kemp) 2 Mr. C. J. Parker’s b g Ardfert, 4 yrs, 8.4 (J. Buchanan) 3 Also ran: Mura Ahi 7.9, Kaumoana 7.9, The Raft 7.7, Master Stead 7.4, Te Raumeria 7.0. Sublime and Masonic drew out from a good start, with Ardfert next, whilst Te Raumeria brought up the rear. The order fo the three leading horses was maintained until nearing the bend, when Masonic went to the front. Ardfert also came on, and a good race between the three horses took place in the straight. The top-weight came on strongly on the inside and won by a length, and Masonic, stalling off a hot challenge, beat Ardfert for second place by a length. The Raft, which came up in the straight, finished fourth, Master Stead fifth, and Muri Ahi was last. Time, Imin. 18 l-ssec. FIRST HURDLES HANDICAP of 60 sovs.: second horse to receive 10 sovs. from stake. One and three-quarter miles, over seven flights of hurdles. Mr. W. S. Davidson’s ch g Reservoir, by Jet d’E'au —Cartouche, 11.3 (J. Jones) 1 Mr. C. W. Johnston’s ch g Haurangi, 9.0 (P. O’Brien) 2 Mr. W. C. Woods’ b g Te Rahui, 9.0, and 51b. over (W. Wilson) 3 Also started: Te Kainui 9.5. Haurangi got the worst of the start, but soon closed up. Te Kainui and Te Rahui rose together at the first jump. Reservoir hit hard and lost some ground. The horses then lined out, and passing* the stand the order was Haurangi, Te Rahuo, Te Kainui, and Reservoir. Wilson urged his mount on, and he soon closed up with the lightweight, and at the back of the course went away to the front. Reservoir also came on strongly, and jumping somewhat beter than he did in the first stage of the rage, rose at the same time as Haurangi and Te Rahui at the last jump. The top-weight then gained at every stride on the flat, and

won by seven lengths. Te Rahui touched the hurdle and fell behind, finishing three lengths from Haurangi. Time, 3min. 29 3-ssec.

FIRST COUNTY STAKES HANDICAP of 50 sovs.; second horse to receive 10 sovs. from stake. For all horses bred in the counties of Cook, Waiapa, and Wairoa. Six furlongs. Mr J. B. Hollier’s br g Continuance, by Sabretache—Chibouk, 8.9 and 21b. over (S. Reid) : 1 Mr. A. B. Newman’s b g Eiya, /.IO ana 31b. over (F. Porter) 2 Mr. R. Sherratt’s ch m Swarthmoor, 6.12 (Jas. Kemp) 3 Also started: Local Option 6.7. The quartette moved off well together. Eiya and Local Option went to the front, and Continuance and Swarthmoor were lying handy. At the bend Continuance came on, and a good race between it and Eiya in the straight resulted in Continuance getting home by a neck. Swarthmoor was four lengths away third, and Local Option a bad last. Time, Imin. 18 2-ssec.

SPRING HANDICAP of 120 sovs.; second horse to receive 10 sovs. from stake. One and a-quarter miles. Mr. G. B. Oman’s Paisano, by Strowan—Booby, 8.9 (Buchanan) 1 Mr. J. Clark’s Spate, 8.0 (E. Lowe).... 2 Mr. F. E. Loomb’s Dardanus, 7.10 (R.

Brown) ■.•••••••• 3 Also started: Gladsmuir 8.1. Hinetitama 7.10, The Squatter 7.0. Passing the stand, The Squatter was slightly in the lead of Paisano, Spate, and Dardanus. Gladsmuir was next, and Hinetitama last. This order was maintained, with the exception that Dardanus fell back a little until the bend into the straight was reached. Here the topweight and Dardanus came on, and a great race between the four liprses ensued. Paisano succeeded in passing the post about a neck in front of Spate, which beat Dardanus by about the same distance. The Squatter was just a head behind Dardanus, Gladsmuir and Hinetitama being some distance in the rear. Time, 2min. 14 3-ssec.

WELTER HANDICAP of 50 sovs.; second horse to receive 10 sovs. from the stake. Seven furlongs. Mr. J. R. McDonald’s Jet de More, by New Forest—Princess Maud, 9.1 (F. Reid) 1 Mr. W. H. Corrigan’s The Raft, 8.10 (Lowe) - Mr. J. Robson’s Gatenby, 8.7 (J. O’Brien) 3 Also started: Ardfert 9.8, Eiya 9.3, Rakaikiteroa 8.7.

From a good start The Raft went to the front, and led into the straight. A great finish was witnessed between the first four horses. Jet de 'More won by a length, and a head separated the other horses. Ardfert was fourth, Eiya fifth, and the lightweight last. Time, Imin. 34 l-ssec. MAIDEN SCURRY of 50 sovs.; second horse to receive 10 sovs. from stake. Four furlongs. Mr. G, C. Ormond’s Te Rakato, by Birkenhead —Hinetaura. 8.0 (E. Lowe) 1 Mr. W. S. Davidson’s Dazzling, 8.0 (R. El Brown) 2 Mr. M. G. Nasmith’s Kilsyth, 8.0 (F. Porter) .3 Also started: San Lure 8.0, Forst William 8.0, Special 8.0, Hirini 8.0, The Chef 8 0, Goldfinder 8.0, Plaything 8.0, Shyann 8-0. The colours of Dazzling were the first to show up, and the filly led to within a short distance from the winning post. Te Rakato, which lay handy, put in a strong run in the straight, and won by half a length. A couple of lengths separated second and third horses. The rest of the starters finished more or less together, Time, 50 4-ssec. FLYING HANDICAP of 90 sovs.; second horse to receive 10 sovs. from stake. Six furlongs. Mr. P. Dodge’s Lady Rohina 7.5. and 21b. over (iC. Brown) 1 Mr. M. G. Nasmith’s Auldearn, 8.9 (F. Porter) 2 Mr. J. F. Pettie’s Pearl Reef, 8.0 (E. Lowe) 3 Also started: The Squatter 7.7, Erin 7.6, Martyr King 6.10. The Squatter was nearly left at the barrier, and the other horses went off in a straggling fashion. Lady Rohina got the best of the start. She led all the way, and won comfortably by several lengths. Three lengths separated second and third horses, and Auldearn finished a head behind Pearl Reef. My Darling made the running until the home stretch was entered, when Continuance dashed up on the outside and beat the Mer.riwee mare for first money by a length. Baldos made a good strong nun in the straight, and finished about a nose behind My Darling. Time, Imin. 48 3-ssec. SECOND DAY. The Poverty Bay Turf Club’s Spring Meeting concluded most successfully. The investments on the machine amounted to £4663, as against £5286 for the second day last year. The amount on the machine for the two days fell short of the last Spring Meeting’s investments by £863. This year a total of £9526 was put through, as against £10,389 last year. Mr. A. Mclntosh’s Ladylike was weighed out to start in the Farewell Handicap, but on entering the birdcage she was found to be lame in the off leg, and the president (Mr. J. W. Only these two started. The pair got away to a good start, and raced together over the first furlong. Continuance then drew away, and established a lead of a couple of lengths. At the back of the course Gatenby moved up, and the two horses raced together into the home straight. A g'ood finish was witnessed, Gatenby winning by about a head. Time, Imin. 46% sec.

SECOND HURDLES HANDICAP of 60 sovs.; second horse to receive 10 sovs. from stake. One mile and a-half, over six flights of hurdles. W. S. Davidson’s Reservoir, 12.2 (J.

Jones) 1 W. C. Woods’ Te Rahui, 9.8 (W. Wilson) 2 G. W. Johnston’s Haurangi, 9.5 (P. O’Brien) 3 Also started: Te Kanui 9.0.

Reservoir got the worst of a bad start. Passing the stand Haurangi was in the lead, with Te Kanui and Te Rahui lying handy, and Reservoir was some distance behind. Going out at the bend, Te Rahui went forward and raced alongside of Haurangi to the back of the course, where he took the lead. Reservoir also started to move up, and, coming on gallantly, entered the. straight with Te Rahui. This pair made a good finish of it. They took the last hurdle together, but Reservoir gained on the flat, and won by half a length. Haurangi was some distance away third. Time. 2min. 56sec. .

LADIES’ BRACELET HANDICAP of 50 sovs.; first horse to receive a bracelet value 40 sovs., second horse to receive a bracelet value 10 sovs. One mile. Mrs. R. Sherratt’s ch m Swarthmoor, 10.8 (J. Clark) .1 Mrs. Honan’s Baldos. 11.13 (P. Parker) 2 ■Mrs. J. R. McDonald’s Jet de More, 11.9 (J. McDonald) 3 Also started: My Darling, Ardfert, Carron, Llangollan, and Local Option. The race was run in a heavy shower of rain. Mr. Piper dispatched the field to a good start. The colours of Carron were the first to show up, with My Darling laying next to that horse, and the other horses following in close order. At the bend Baldos was seen to come through, and looked like a winner, but Swarthmoor, which had been lying handy, came away in the straight and won comfortably by three lengths. Jet de More made a good run in the straight and finished in third place, about four lengths from Baldos, Carron being fourth. Time, Imin. 50 2-ssec.
