NORTHERN BOXING ASSOCIATION’S CARNIVAL.
OPENS MONDAY NIGHT.
The two nights’ carnival promoted by the Northern Boxing Association opens at His Majesty’s Theatre on Monday night next, and an excellent programme is in store for boxing pa trons on both evenings. The professional light-weight contest between Tim Tracy and Alf. Gault is at present the chief topic of conversation in boxing circles, and as both men have been putting in solid training for the event, a sterling contest is promised. Tracy has arrived in Auckland, and is in tip-top form, while Gault has been going through a daily preparation since h : s return from Sydney, and states that he is feeling as fit as a fiddle. It is therefore confidently anticipated that the pair w’ll give a good account of themselves when brought together on Monday night, and a bumper house is expected.
The tournament for amateur Rugby footballers is creating considerable interest, no less than 18 entries having been received for this event. These include members of the leading district clubs’ senior teams, and should they be as clever with the gloves as they are on the football field, some highly exciting sport should be witnessed- Ponsonby proved victors in the Rugby championship, University secured a royal win in the seven-a-side tournament at the A.R.U.’s athletic carnival, and as all of the seven district clubs are represented in the boxing tournament, it will be exceedingly interesting to see which club provides the fistic champions. The following entries have been received by Mr. J. H. Trudgeon, hon. secretary of the Northern Boxing Association: — Ponsonby Football Club.—C. Savoury (heavy-weight), A. McKinnon (heavy-weight), J. Hall (heavyweight), G- Sellars (middle-weight). City Football Club.—P. Sheahan (middle-weight), Smith (heavyweight), P. Williams (heavy-weight), A. Waddell (heavy-weight). University Football Club.—Patterson (middle-weight), T. Wilkes (middle-weight).
Parnell Football Club—H. Haddrill (middle-weight).
Grafton Football Club. —J- McGuire .(heavy-weight), A. McDonald (middleweight) .
Newton Football Club.—D. Johnson (heavy-weight).
North Shore Football Club. —Watson (light-weight). Wednesday Afternoon Union. — A. Griffin (light-weight). Te Aroha Rugby Union.—G- Olson (middle-weight). Thames Rugby Union. — McNeill (light-weight).
A number of bouts will also take place between well-known amateur boxers, some of which will be as follows: —Webb v. Pemberthy (welterweight) ; Craig v. Crane (lightweight) ; McLaren v. O’Brien (ban-tam-weight), and Ross v. L. O’Halloran (light-weight). C. Stuart, of Timaru, who won the amateur bantamweight championship of New Zealand at Dunedin some months back, will in all probability be pitted against O’Meara, the clever young Auckland bantam-weight boxer. Should this match take place, a good contest is anticipated, both lads being very smart with their hands.
