THE WANGANUI JOCKEY CLUB’S SPRING MEETING.
OPENS TO-DAY. The spring meeting of the Wanganui Jockey Club opens to-day, and will be continued on Saturday. Good acceptances have been received for the seven events on the programme, the names of a number of the leading horses in the Dominion figuring among the probable starters. The Wanganui Guineas will be fought out among some of the crack three-year-olds of New Zealand, Sir Geo. Clifford’s Broadsword being among the nine horses that have accepted. . No less than thirteen acceptances were received for the big mile event, the Spring Handicap, All Red being the topweight in this event. Two hurdle races come up for decision, viz., the Okehu and the Gonville Hack, and both events have attracted the bestknown Southern jumpers. The Flying Handicap over six furlongs is certain to be a well-contested race, as such fast movers as St. Bill, Longner, and Mon Ami are likely to go to the post. The other event to be decided is the Putiki Hack Handicap, in which nine horses are engaged, Miscast being the top weight with Bst 101 b. The events on the second day’s programme are as follows: —Owen Handicap, six furlongs; Moutoa Hack Handicap, three-quarters of a mile; Brunswick Handicap Hurdle Race, one mile and a-half; Aramoho Hack Hurdle Race, one mile and a-half; H’ggie Handicap, one mile and a-quarter; Railway Hack Handicap, six furlongs; Marangai Handicap, one mile. Judging by the horses engaged *.n the various events, Wanganui racing patrons should be treated to two day? excellent racing.
