AVONDALE JOCKEY CLUB’S SPRING MEETING.

ASHBY WINS THE AVONDALE STAKES. THE CUP GOES TO TATTOO. The racing season of 1909-10 was inaugurated in Auckland on Saturday, when the Avondale Jockey Club opened their Spring Meeting. The weather was beautiful during the carrying out of the programme, but at the conclusion of the last race heavy rain fell. The club’s secretary, Mr. H. H. Hayr, and staff conducted the meeting in their usual up-to-date manner, and, there being nothing to mar proceedings, a most enjoyable outing was provided. Good fields were the order of the day, and Mr. R. Wynyard’s adjustments were productive of some fairly close finishes. Other gentlemen to carry out their duties satisfactorily were Messrs. F. W. Edwards, starter; R. B. Lusk, judge; S. R. Speight, timekeeper, and F. W. Marks, clerk of the scales. Twenty-eight bookmakers paid a fee of £l2 10s. each, and one and all must be able to report a good day, the favourites being defeated in each race. Mr. J. E. Cooke and his staff had charge of the totalisator, and were kept fairly busy, the sum handled being £8954, compared with £8352 on the opening day last year, an increase of £602. THE RACING. A PROMISING MAIDEN. The curtain raised, a field of eleven went to the post for the Maiden Plate, six furlongs, and punters sorted out Royal Scotland as the most likely one to supply the winner. Urania was quickest out, but Lady Doon soon took command, and she showed the way to the distance, where Deeley brought Admiral Soult along with a great run, and won very easily by a couple of lengths from Urania, who just defeated Fleet Arrow for second money. The favourite did not have a very pleasant passage, and did well to finish fourth. The winner is a brown gelding by Soult —Pansy, and should have a promising future. DEELEY SCORES AGAIN. The visitor Kareroa was made a hotpot for the Henderson Handicap, four furlongs, with Sea Elf best backed of the others. Lady French, who had the services of Deeley, jumped away quickly, and that was the end of it so far as the winner was concerned. Sea Elf ran a good race, as did also the favourite, and the latter may do better before the meeting closes. THE AVONDALE STAKES. The Avondale Stakes, in which the two-year-olds of Auckland make their debut, was the next event to claim attention, and fourteen youngsters faced the barrier. Irritation was made favourite, but the Soult —Vexation filly did not hit out freely, and appeared sore. A quiet tip was Ashby, who had been responsible for a couple of pretty lively three-furlong spins on the track. The Waikato-trained King Soult was second favourite, but he looked as though he could do with a little more work, and when November comes will probably be the best we have, if not before. Doughboy proved a nuisance at the barrier, and played up considerably, on one occasion throwing Mark Ryan. When the field were despatched Lady Obie was quickest away, with King Soult, Ashby and Irritation close up, and thus they turned into the straight. In the run to the box, J. Buchanan put the question to Ashby, and the son of Obligado answering in good style he won nicely by a couple of lengths from King Soult, with Lady Obie a length and a-half away third. Irritation and Monoplane were next. After the race, Ashby, who is by Obligado—Tournament, was led on to the lawn and decorated with the usual blue riband by Miss Gorrie. Ashby was bred by the Cambria Park Stud Company, and bought as a yearling in January last by Mr. Murdoch McLean for 35 guineas. The runner-up, King Soult, realised 500 guineas at the sale of the Glenora Park yearlings, while Lady Obie, who finished third, was sold for 25 guineas at the Cambria Park sale. NEWTOWN WINS EASILY. Mr. J. Twohill’s recent purchase, Commander, was made favourite for the First Hurdles, while a good price was on offer about Newtown, whose chance on both paper and track work looked bright indeed. Master . Paul showed the way over the first three obstacles, when Newtown took charge,

and he was in command at the halfmile post, when Commander ranged alongside, but soon dropped back again, and it was only a matter of Newtown standing up to win. Making no mistakes, he won very comfortably by half a dozen lengths from Commander, who finished up well. Master Paul was some distance away third, while Hina pulled up at the last fence. TATTOO DEFEATS ELYSIAN A HEAD. The Cup attracted a field of ten, Sir Artegal, who had been responsible for some taking gallops on the track, being made favourite, with Sedition next in demand, while Elysian also had numerous supporters. From a good start, Inglis was first away, but he soon gave place to Tattoo, who was in front at the end of a furlong and remained there throughout, winning after an exciting finish by a head from Elysian, who finished up his task in good style. Sedition was third, and Inglis, who found the distance too far, fourth. Sir Artegal put in a run about half a mile from home, but he soon cried a “go.” Ben Jonson found the pace too hot, and finished in the rear. Tattoo established a new record for the race by covering the distance in 2min. 9 2-ssec. The previous best was Nonette’s, 2min. llsec. DUE TO HORSEMANSHIP. Only four contested the Steeplechase —viz., Tanglefoot, Pierre, Good Faith, and Red McGregor. Tanglefoot was made a hot favourite. The field kept well together over the first couple of rounds, A. Julian, on Red McGregor, on a couple of occasions having his time occupied in keeping his mount on his feet. Three furlongs from home Julian began driving Red McGregor along in earnest, and was soon upsides with Tanglefoot. From this out the issue was never in doubt, and Red McGregor won nicely by three lengths from the fast finishing Pierre, with Good Faith a couple of lengths further back and the favourite last. ANOTHER STRONG FAVOURITE BEATEN. Backers would have nothing but Coromandel in the Plunket Handicap, and were taking a price with the bookmakers rather than support the machine. However, the good thing had to put up with second place to Waihuku, who won by four lengths from the favourite. John, who acted the role of pacemaker for a good portion of the journey, finished third. NECKTIE WINS THE FLYING. The St. Paul gelding Tanekaha was voted something approaching a moral in the Flying Stakes, but once again backers received a rude shock. Aimwell was first away, followed by Necktie, while the favourite was slow to move. At the entrance to the straight Necktie dashed into the lead, and the little daughter of Menschikoff won handsomely by two lengths from the favourite, with Aimwell third. The six furlongs occupied lmin. 15 l-ssec. Tjie racing resulted as follows:— MAIDEN PLATE HANDICAP of 80 sovs; second horse to receive 10 sovs. out of the stake. Six furlongs. Messrs.
