HAWKE’S BAY BOXING TOURNAMENT.
TIM TRACY v. 808 TURNER.
The Hawke’s Bay Boxing Tournament was held at Hastings on Tuesday night of last week, before a crowded audience. Mr. A. E. Whatman (Palmerston North) was referee. An exhibition spar of four rounds between Young (Napier) and Morris (Port Ahuriri) opened the proceedings. The preliminary bout of the six threeminutes’ rounds for a £lO purse then took place between Murphy (Hastings) and Marks (Gisborne). The first round respited in favour of Murphy, Marks coming down on his knees twice. In the second round Murphy again had Marks down for six seconds and then for nine seconds, thus terminating the contest. Crawford (Gisborne) and M'Lisky (Hastings) then met in four two-minute rounds for a trophy. This was a very even contest, and the verdict went to Crawford on points. The big event of the evening then took place. This was a fifteen threeminute round professional contest for the light-weight supremacy of New Zealand, between Turner (Sydney) and Tracy (Wellington) for a purse of £75. Both men were evidently in splendid condition, and both scaled exactly 9st. 101 b. The first round resulted in a series of clinches, neither having much the best of it. The second round resulted in favour of Tracy, and the referee had to warn Turner to break away. The third round was in favour of Turner, who got in some good left swings, while Tracy replied with body blows. In the fifth round Tracy got home on Turner’s chin. The sixth round was Turner’s, and Tracy appeared to have slightly the best of the remaining rounds. In the end the referee announced a draw. The decision did not give satisfaction to a large portion of the audience, who reckoned Tracy the best man.
