NOTES.
W. Tyler, who was a member of the Pro. Black team that went Home to play under Northern Union rules, is now playing the Australian game in Auckland, being one of the Eden Club’s best men.
R. Magee was absent from the City back division on Saturday, being unable to play owing to a severe injury to his finger.
Tonks, a last year’s member of the Parnell forward division, donned the maroon colours on Saturday, and, despite the fact that it was his first appearance on the football field this season, was responsible for a very willing display.
The visit to New Zealand of Mr. C. Ford, as emissary of the New South Wales Rugby Union, has resulted in an agreement being made with a New Zealand team, through Mr. D. Fraser (of the professional All Blacks), to play a series of games in New South Wales and Queensland in June and July (says the “Referee.”) The New Zealand team promises to be one of considerable strength, and if so the matches with the New South Wales an d Australian teams should produce stirring football. They are sure to attract a good share of the football public’s patronage, despite the falling off of interest in club games- Matches are to be played in the Agricultural Ground on Saturday, Wednesday, and
Saturday, June 5,9, and 12. The arrangements for the visit of the Maoris have not proved so easy. A team will probably come to Sydney, though it will differ in personnel a good deal from that which earlier arrangements foreshadowed. It is believed, however, that the football strength will be satisfactory. * ♦ ♦ * A young man named Thos. Martin, a tailor, died while being conveyed ■ rom the football field at Oamaru on Thursday. He had complained of feeling unwell for several days, and while playing football in a match it is supposed he struck one of the goalposts with his head. The doctor who attended him says that death was due to hemorrhage of the brain. * ♦ * * Seeling, the City skipper, will probably be missing from the red and black ranks in their match against University on Saturday, owing to an injury to his back, received in last Saturday’s match. * * » Whereas last season good backs were few and far between in Auckland club football, this year sees quite a host of new players in the rear divisions of the various teams. As Auckland has always been able to place a powerful combination of forwards on the field, and as this season there will be a wide selection of backs to choose from, the 1909 Auckland rep. team should be a particularly strong one. Among the new backs playing here this season are O’Leary, Morse, McGregor (Ponsonby), Baker, Tobin (City), and Beale (Grafton).
