HOCKEY.
Great difficulty is being experienced in Wellington in securing a sufficient number of referees to officiate in the matches.
The Auckland Hockey Association’s Championship competit ; ons were commenced at the various grounds on Saturday, and the fqrm ,shown in; most of the matches was of a high standard. Auckland defeated Ponsonby four goals to two, but there was not the difference in the teams the score would lead one to suppose. University, who had much the better
of the game had no difficulty in defeating College Rifles by eight goals to one. Both matches were played at Remuera. On the Domain United scored an easy win over Y.M.C.A., by seven goals to one, while at North Shore, a very close game between North Shore and St. George’s was won by the former by one goal to nil. The second-grade matches resulted as follows: — Pimpernel 4 goals, beat Y.M.C.A. 2 goals; Ponsonby v. North Shore, a draw 3 goals each; United 9 goals, beat University 2 goals; St. Georges 5 goals, beat Auckland 1 goal; Training College 4 goals, beat College Rifles 3 goals.
