TRAINING NOTES.

ELLERSLIE. THURSDAY. Fine weather prevailed on Thursday, and the work at Ellerslie was interesting. Sea Elf showed to more advantage than Maheno over five furlongs in 1.5 4-5, Doggerbank running a furlong less in 51 4-5. Master Soult galloped seven furlongs in 1.30—a good go—Coromandel taking 1132. Scotty covered a circuit in 1.59 4-5, and Apollonaris six furlongs in 1.17 3-5. It took Necktie 1.19 2-5 to run the last-mentioned distance. Santa Rosa appeared to be moving bettei’ than Waimangu over seven furlongs, the journey occupying 1.32 2-5, and Chanteuse (alone) ran the same distance in 1.30 2-5 —a good performance. Epsom Lass beat Dunborve over seven furlongs in 1.33 2-5, and Turbine beat Censure over half a mile in 52 2-ss. Escamillo got to the end of six furlongs in 1.18 1-5, and Downfall and Merriwa beat Hyperion a length over five furlongs in 1.4 4-5. Downfall moved well. Rimlock ran four furlongs in 545, and Tetrazzini, who got the best of the start, beat Elysian and Tuku Tuku over the same distance in 50 2-ss. Bully and Gladsmuir finished the same distance in front of Freevata over a circuit, which took 2.2. First Mate covered seven furlongs in 1.36, and Tarina beat Miss Advance over four furlongs in 51 2-ss, Mary Ann taking 1.5 2-5 to run a furlong further. Auldearn ran three-quarters of a mile in 1.20, and Sir Antrim seven furlongs in 1.34. Carmania beat a companion over six furlongs in 1.21, and Dardanus was too good for Rarata and Explosive over the same distance in 1.18 1-5. Sir Artegal and Manapouri were on terms at the end of five furlongs in 1.8 3-5, a distance Taimanupo easily beat Lady Frances over in 1.5. Tattoo and Urania (late Aqua Fortis) took 1.7 2-5 to do the same distnace, and Kakama (alone) 1.5 1-5. Eblis beat Luscombe over a circuit in 2.2 3-5. Ben Jonson and Te Arai were on terms at the end of a round of the hurdles, both horses giving a good display. Armagh and Carlyle were sent over the pony hurdles, and Okaihau was also given a turn over a couple of hurdles. A round of the steeplechase course was safely negotiated by Capitol and Warden, both jumping faultlessly. SATURDAY. The tracks were a bit heavy at Ellerslie on Saturday morning, but nevertheless some very interesting work was witnessed. Master Soult set the ball rolling by casting seven furlongs behind in 1.32 2-5, while Michaeloff took 1.33 3-5 and Waimangu 1.36. Apollonaris and Santa Rosa ran six furlongs in 1.20 4-5, the former having slightly the best of the “ go.” Excalibur ran half a mile in 53sec., and Advocate a circuit in 2.4 1-5. Epsom Lass and Dunborve were together at the end of a mile in 1.55, but were not extended. Chanteuse got to the end of seven furlongs in 1.32 3-5 —a good gallop—and Spate was going better than Freevata at the end of a similar journey, occupying 1.35. Elysian and Hyperion sprinted half a mile in 51 2-ssec., the former pleasing most. It took First Mate 1.22 to run six furlongs, and Auldearn, who is galloping well, 1.20. Merriwa and Downfall covered four furlongs in 52 2-ss„ both moving well. Te Arai ran once round in 2.4, and Carmania 2.2 2-5, while Mary Ann sprinted half a mile in 52 2-ss. Aimwell beat Rarata over the last-named distance in 525., Sir Artegal taking 535. All the above gallops were on the grass. On the sand, Doggerbank was going a good deal better than Sea Elf at the end of a fast four furlongs, which occupied 525., and Coromandel ran a mile in 1.48. First Gun and Bully finished together several lengths in front of Gladsmuir at the end of a circuit, occupying 1.58 1-5. Scotty, alone,

took 2.3 2-5 over a similar distance. First Wairiki and Lady Doon spurted half a mile in 52 2-55., and Escamillo five furlongs in 1.5 3-5. Rimlock beat Maheno over the latter distance in 1.5. Lochbuhie ran six furlongs in 1.21, and Taimanupo seven furlongs in 1.32 2-5. Tattoo beat Explosive over five furlongs in 1.8. Ben Jonson, Cuiragno, and Luscombe finished as written over a round of the hurdles. Creusot and Warden were allotted a like task, all jumping well. Le Beau over the pony hurdles and Mozart over the big fences also gave capital displays. TUESDAY. The weather, although cold, kept fine for the gallops this morning. Al the work not otherwise mentioned was done on the grass track. Maheno and Sea Elf fluttered over five furlongs in 1.4 4-5. Coromandel, who has greatly improved, had a credit of 1.17 4-5 for the six-furlong journey. Master Soult, giving First Gun a big start, chased him within two lengths over seven furlongs in 1.30; Scotty, alone, running round the circle in 1.57 4-5. Apollinaris put up a creditable six furlongs in 1.17 3-5. Santa Rosa had Waimangu hard pressed at the end of a mile, the last seven furlongs in 1.32 2-5. Chanteuse showed to good advantage from the seven furlong post in 1.30 2-5 Silent was in front of Excalibar over the five-furlong course in 1.7 3-5. on the sand. The bulky Turbine never gave censure a look in over half a mile sprint in 52 3-ss. Escamillo, gallpoing freely over six furlongs in 1.18 2-5. Downfall had Meriwa and Hyperion in trouble at the end of a four-furlong sprint in 1.5. The Cup horse is very forward. Rimlock galloped half a mile in 54sec. Tetrazzini flashed home in front of Tuku Tuku and Elysian in the good time of 50 2-ssec. for four furlongs. Bully, Gladsmuir, and Freevata were together for the first seven furlongs of a mile, the latter then tailed off, and Bully, finishing the strongest, ran the circle in 2.1 4-5. on the sand.

The Thames pair, Jena and Impulsive did easy work. First Mate did a moderate seven furlongs in 1.36 2-5. Auldearn improved this by 2-5 of a second. Mary Ann, not all out, ran five furlongs in 1.6 3-5. Tarina and Miss Advance put in a useful four furlongs in 51 2-55., with little to choose between them. Carmania, on the sand, was all out for six furlongs in 1.21. Sir Antrim put in a useful seven furlongs in 1.34. After breakfast Frank Ross gave Pukenui a seven-furlong pipe-opener in 1.34 4-5. Lochbuie and All’s Well were not out on a watch-breaking mission; ran six furlongs. Dardanus gave Rarata and Explosive a good dressing down over the same distance in 1.19 3-5. Tattoo seemed to be going easier than Mania from the five furlong post in the moderate time of 1.7 2-5. Tamainupo gave the speedy Lady Frances and Aimwell a start and a beating for five furlongs in 1.5 3-5. Kakama alone did a similar task, knocking off 2-sths of a second. Waihuka ran away from Noteorini at the end of seven furlongs in 1.32 2-5. Mid Cyr and another ran round the battens in 3.3 3-5. Ben Johnson and Te Arai got round the same course in 1.49 1-5. Reservoir spurted a few furlongs. Paratutu hopned over two hurdles, but did not take to it kindly. Sir Artegal, Manapouri, Dainty, Epsom Lass, Dunborve, Armagh, Okaihau and others worked. Warden and Capitol jumned the big country, fencing well. M. Deeble was on the latter. RICCARTON. CHRISTCHURCH, April 6. The tracks at Riccarton are in splendid order just now, and in view of the Easter Meeting next week some fast gallops have been recorded during the past few days. On Thursday morning, Husbandman (alone) left a mile and a-quarter behind in 2.17, and Flitaway, who was looking in fine buckle, cast a mile behind her in 1.45 2-5, finishing strongly. Sharpshooter, who had a pull in the weights, was too good for Buccleuch over five furlongs, run in 1.6 3-5. Bountiful had Tikitere’s measure at the end of a mile run, which occupied 1.48. Orsino galloped seven furlongs in 1.36%, and Lady Disdain sprinted six furlongs in 1.18. 2-5. Whistlecraft took 1.50 to traverse a mile, while De Witte cut out the same distance a second quicker. Ploughshare brushed over five furlongs in 1.6%. Thistledown spurted half a mile in 515., while Zemlia defeated Ingoda in a spin over the same distance in 525. Petrovna ran six furlongs in 1.23. After the breakfast interval, Boutade ran half a mile in 52 l-55., and Serenade covered a similar distance up

the back in the same time. Leonardo compassed two circuits on the tan at half-speed, while Contender dashed over six furlongs in 1.18 3-5. Federal gave Narrangarie a lot of weight and a couple of lengths’ start, and defeated him with ridiculous ease in a spin ovei’ six furlongs, which he ran in 1.19 3-5, being under a strong pull throughout. Ennius ran six furlongs in 1.25. Tawa, with Snip for a companion, galloped a mile, tiring perceptibly at the finish. Tremulous cast six furlongs behind her in 1.20, while Hesperus spurted half a mile fairly comfortably in 545. Alexis, with a featherweight up, galloped a similar distance in 51 4-ss. Lady Lochiel, with a big advantage in the weights, easily defeated King’s Way over six furlo - xs in 1.24 4-5. King’s Way ran abo-i.a lot at the finish, and showed a tendency to shirk his work. Sea King compassed two steady circuits, brushing home over the last two furlongs of each round. Vai dimar (Chapman) and All Guns (Hack) were associated in a gallop over six furlongs, which occupied 1.19 2-5. Both were fully extended, and Valdimar was a good length in front as they passed the post. Passion (C. Emerson), assisted by Merry Lass (McClusky) over the last half-mile, dashed over six furlongs in 1.17 4-5, while Kilwinning took 1.19 2-5 to complete a similar distance- Eurus and Stronghold galloped a mild, the latter holding his companion safe at the finish. Southern Cross ran a mile in 1.53. Scotch Plaid spurted half a mile up the back in 51, a pleasing performance. Sister Anne had Taskmaster well beaten in a spin over five furlongs, which occupied 1.6 2-5. Cymbiform dashed over half a mile in 51%, and Sedulity ran a similar distance up the back in 56%. Vale traversed a mile in 1.55, while Zetland and Harvest, together, covered a similar distance at three-quarter speed. Montreal defeated Nightlight and Edna over half-a-mile in 54, and Ellerton, alone, traversed a mile n 1-49%.

Gold Thread and Gold Treasure arrived from the orth yesterday, and were taken to Ya)dhurst, where they are quartered. E. J. Rae, Mr. Donnelly’s private trainer, who came in charge of the pair, returned North again last night to take another team to Auckland, and Gold Thread and Gold Treasure will, it is understood, have the final touches put on them by R. J. Mason.

There was little work this (Friday) morning, but a large number of horses were out. Gold Thread and Gold Treasure were out, and did steady pacing on the plough. Sea King galloped six furlongs in 1-20, but appeared to be tiring at the finish. Husbandman and Flitaway, looking well, got through steady pacing, as did Broadsword, Lady Disdain, Ploughshare, Petrovna and Zetland.

A perfect morning greeted trainers on Saturday. Most of the work was accomplished on the outside of the trial grass, which meant that horses would be running slightly over th-, measured distance. Cutts was early astir, and sent Broadsword over fast gallop at the back over six furlongs. He was followed by Husbandman, who galloped a mile and a-quarter in 2.18, finishing strongly. Flitaway put up an attractive gallop over a mile, which she left behind in 1.44, finishing well. Passion ran seven furlongs on the grass in 1.33, while Zemlin and Ingoda brushed over five furlongs in 1.5. Lady Disdain was going strongly at the end of six furlongs in 1.19 while Gold Thread and Gold Treasure, after doing some cantering, spurted home over half a mile. Tikitere, assisted by bountiful and Somaroft, cut out a mile and a-quarter in 2-14, a good gallop. G'lenculloch did even better over the same distance, his time being 2.12 3-5. He finished up his task well. Petrovna ran half-a-mile in 515.; Sharpshooter defeated Ploughshare over five furlongs, run in 1.5; Chief Lochiel eas- ■ ly defeated Zetland over a mile, the last seven furlongs of which occupied 2-5. Sea King left six furlongs xren’txd in 1.19, while Orsino and Whisriecraft were well matched in a gallop over a mile, which they ran in 1.46 3-5- Prim ran half-a-mile in 51 2-5, but pulled up lame. After breakfast Serenade brushed over five furlongs on tne plough comfortably in 1-5. Snip, assisted by King’s Way over the last six furlongs, ran seven furlongs, being fully extended. Hesperus galloped six furlongs in 1.20 4-5, while All Guns (Chapman) traversed a mile and a-quarter in 2.13 4-5 from a walking-up start, being fully extended. Vladimar had Cymbiform well beaten at the end of a strongly-run six furlongs, which occupied 1.18, while Leonardo put in two circuits on the plough at steady to halfspeed. Stronghold and Eurus ran a mile in 1.55 3-5, finishing together, and Tremulous galloped seven fur-

longs on the plough in 1.34 4-5. Alexis ran six furlongs comfortably in 1.20, while Contender was doing his best at the encl of a similar distance on the grass, which he ran in 1.17%. Kilwinning cast six furlongs behind him in 1.17 2-5, while Ellerton (McClusky) galloped seven furlongs in 1.36%. Taskmaster defeated Fasnakyle in a spin over six furlongs, run in 1.19, and Sister Anne spurted five furlongs. Equivocator ran half-a-mile on the tan track in 52 1-5. Scotch Plaid and Southern Cross, separately, put in steady pacing over two circuits, wune Montreal ran five furlongs in 1.5 1-5. Atmospheric conditions this morning were all that could be desired, and proceedings were of an interesting character. The majority of the work was accomplished on the plough, which was in capital order, while the grass also provided good going. Flitaway and Husbandman were the first pair out. Breaking away at the mile disc on the plough they set out for a sound gallop, Flitaway finishing up her task in good style, defeating her companion by two lengths, the time registered being 1.43. Glenculoch traversed a mile in 1.44%, finishing strongly. Boutade, with a good advantage in weights, finished six lengths in front of Federal at the end of a spin over six furlongs run in 1.18. De Witte spurted five furlongs, the last half-mile of which occupied 525. Sir Tristram was going easily at the end of a spin over six furlongs with Woodhey, run in 1-19. Orsino brushed over six furlongs on the grass in 1.18 4-5, while there was little to choose between Tikitere and Bountiful (feather-weight) at the end of a mile and a-quarter, run in 2.15. Somaroff, who assisted the pair over the last five furlongs, finished in front. Stronghold and Eurus, together traversed a mile in 1.51, and Buccleuch and Musterer spurted five furlongs in 1.4. Buccleuch is improving daily. Whistlecraft defeated Sharpshooter by eight lengths over six furlongs, run in 1.17 1-5, and Lady Disdain was too good for Petrovna over six furlongs, run in 1.17%, but both performed somewhat disappointingly. St. Felix ran half-a-mile in 535., and Zemlio had Ingoda well beaten at the end of a fast six furlongs on the grass, the last five of which occupied 1-5- Aisy finished up strongly over the last part of a steady circuit. Chiarnian spurted half-a-mile in 52%. Bollin and Diamond Star registered one of the best gallops of the morning by runningseven furlongs in 1.30%. The pair finished abreast, but Bollin, who carried a great deal more weight, pleased most. Ploughshare was better than Claymore at the end of a spin over five furlongs, run in 1.4%. Ellerton .defeated Harvest over a mile in 1.46 1-5, while Xylophone and Rialto brushed over the last three furlongs of two steady circuits, Xylophone showing his companion a clean pair of heels. Thistledown, Ability and others performed light tasks. After breakfast Euclid galloped six furlongs, and Chief Lochiel defeated Zetland over a mile on the grass, run in 1.46 4-5, and Serenade (solus) dashed over six furlongs on the plough in 1.17 2-5, and Alexis (featherweight) ran a similar distance in 1.18. Snip and Leonardo galloped a mile and aquarter in 2.18. Provocation ran six furlongs comfortably in 1.18 4-5, and Sea King, assisted by Hesperus over the first three furlongs, galloped seven furlongs in 1.31%. Tremulous ran seven furlongs in 1.32, and Gold Thread, assisted by Gold Treasure over the last half-mile, cast five furlongs behind her in 1.4 1-5. All Guns defeated Consolation over a mile and a-quarter on the grass in 2.12. Consolation lost a good length’s advantage at the start, and as the pace was solid throughout she was unable to quite make it up. her leeway eventually finishing a little over a length away. Contender ran seven furlongs in 1.33, and Sister Anne brushed over five furlongs in 1.5. Valdimar, after a dingdong set-to over the last furlong, defeated Passion by a clear length over six furlongs in 1.18. Fasnakyle was slightly better than Taskmaster over a similar distance, run in 1.19. Merry Lass dashed over half a mile in 505., and Montreal defeated Southern Cross over six furlongs in 1.21. Cymbiform alone ran a similar distance on the grass in 1.19. Scotch Plaid spurted three furlongs, going very resolutely and well. Tessera’s task was seven furlongs at a strong three-quarter speed, and Kilwinning and several others performed light tasks.

Tumut and Osiris, in charge of McGrath. arrived from the North this morning. H. Cairns, who will pilot Tumut in his engagements, also arrived to-day.

R. Hatch will ride Armlet in the Great Easter Handicap and Glenculloch in the Great Autumn Handicap.
