HAWKE'S BAY

NAPIER, March 24.

T. Jones disposed of Sir Possible to Mr. Costello. It is more than probable that Lady Helen’s son will join W- Griffiths’ team at Hastings. Mr. E. J. Watts’ team are back

from Ngtarawa, where they have been put through their facings of late. The bunch are now domiciled at their old quarters at T. Quinlivan, jun.’s, establishment.

Nadador has a most unsightly near hind leg. The damage was done through her getting in a wire fence. Luckily the wound is only superficial, and Collelo reckons that no ill effects will arise from it.

Mr. H. H. Pharazyn left on a trip to the other colonies last Thursday. Bunkum, the coming two-year-old son of Merriwee and Flatter that W. Stone is getting into shape, is one of the handsomest youngsters that I have seen for some time. Besides being possessed of good looks, he is a solid-built lot, and his outlook generally suggests that he will develop a real good sort. it is satisfactory to know that California is coming along well. The trouble that was the cause of his being laid aside for a time has been discovered by his trainer, and he informed me that though it took some considerable time to locate the ailment, he has done so now, and he is quite satisfied that, although it was of an annoying nature, it was not of a serious description, and it will not lead to any ill effects on the future career of San Frau’s big son. At the Autumn Meeting of the Napier Park Racing Club last season the Hon. J. D. Ormond won seven races; at the just finished gathering of the Napier Park Club foui’ bearers of the all cerise triumphed. Paisano must have proved a profitable horse to his owner of late, for since the beginning of the year his wininng record reads: Won Acland Hack Handicap, Te Karaka Racing Club’s Annual Meeting; won Stewards’ Hack and Carroll Memorial Hack Handicap, Wairoa County R.C. Annual; won Welter Handicap and Second County Stakes, Poverty Bay Turf Club Annual Meeting; and the Close Memorial at the Napier Park last week. Mr. G. B. Oman, the owner of Paisano, will no doubt be best known to racegoers as the sport in whose nomination Medallius won the Grand National Hurdle Race at Riccarton in 1904. That Paisano is well come by there is no denying, for his sire, Strowan, is a son of Lochiel, out of the Maribyrnong mare Marion; while Booby, his dam, is a relative of Merganser, both of these mares tracing back to Gannet. Ismene, who has given to the Turf those brace of speedy equines, Tumut and Osiris, is a half-sister to Strowan by Dreadnought.

Appin is the name that has been selected for the three-year old son of The Possible and Miss- Beckwith. He is the property of the local sport who nominates as Mr. A. Stuart, and if all goes well with him will make his debut at the annual meeting of the Waipukurau Jockey Club on Easter Monday. Ora Pinsent has been leased to Mr. G. Smith, who intends to take the Merriwee mare down to the West Coast of the South Island, where the opposition will not be so classy as Ora Pinsent has been asked to meet of late.

Mr. E. J. Watt has claimed the cognomens of Winning Post for the yearling full sister to Pluck, and Entente for Stepniak’s son out of Couronne, of tne same -age. Other names chosen by the Squire of Longlands for some of this season’s crop of foals are: Easy, bay filly by Merriwee—Float; Nut Brown, brown filly by Merriwee— Brown Alice; Midnight Sun (a full brotner to Noctuiform and Nightfall), Multiform —La Notte; and Royal Scotch, brown colt by Royal Artillery —Barley Bree. Last Thursday was the first occasion upon which Corazon has given the judge the job to put his number up in the winning square. As a two-year-old he faced the starter upon four occasions, seven times as a three-year-old, was not seen out last season, and now has made a successful start as a five-year-old.
