IS IT WHISKY.
In reference to the recent discovery in Wellington of an alleged illicit st’ll. the New Zealand Times relates that the police received information a few days ago alleging that whisky or some similar spirit was being illicitly distilled at 41, Adelaide road. During the early hours of morning therefore, detectives decided to investigate, and for this purpose surrounded the premises. Finding nothing to warrant immediate interference, they withdrew at 2 a.m. Later at eleven o'clock however. Chief Detective Broberg and Detectives Cassells, Andrews, and Lewis again went to the premises, and. ascertaining that the occupiers were within, stationed themselves in pairs back and front of the shop, which is a business building with a portion usable as a dwelling attached. As the detectives were getting into position a man appeared at a door of the premises, and, noticing their movements, retreated, hastily locking the door after him. Detectives Broberg and Lewis forced the front door of the premises and proceeded to the rear. At the same time Detectives Cassells and Andrews moved inwards and secured Maurice John Collins and Thomas Matthews. Neither of these persons, who were in the scullery, resisted •
