NO “TEMPERANCE” TICKET.

The Parnell No-License League had purposed nominating a licensing committee to represent its views, reduction having been carried in Parnell, and five residents had been selected and had consented to form a ticket.. These five gentlemen, however, were not nominated last Monday, and a representative of the “Herald” interviewed a prominent member of the No-L cense League regarding the matter.

He replied that the intention of the league was abandoned on the advice of prominent leaders of the no-license movement. The main object of the no-license movement was to secure the absolute stoppage of the drink tr’*fic by means of a direct vote of . » people. In cases where the reduction vote gave the Licensing Committee the duty of deciding whether a small or a greater number of licenses should be cancelled, the election of a committee pledged to close the maximum number of houses was a matter of importance for the no-license party to attain, but where no vital issue was involved, the licensing district should be saved the cost of a contested election, and the strength of the party reserved for the struggle for the final banishment of the Trade at the next polls. Under the reduction vote, a minimum of one hotel had to be closwhere there were ten hotels, and over ten hotels the minimum was two, so that in Parnell two hotels had to go; the maximum and minimum were the same, the number of hotels in Parnell being 11. The main duties of a new committee would, therefore, be of a totally different character to the objects of the no-license party, and, consequently, the league has agreed to save the expense of a contested election.

Mr. H. B- Massey, returning officer, has received five nominations, those of Messrs, William Thomas, George

William Lasley,. John Lumpkin, Archibald Clements, and Wi lam Gavin. Air. Basley s the only new member, the other .our having sat on the forr mer committee. Five being the requisite number, these five gentlemen have been declared duly. e.ected.
