CONCLUSION OF THE OTAHUHU TROTTING CLUB’S SUMMER MEETING.

A HIGHLY SUCCESSFUL GATHERING. What was probably the most successful meeting in the history of the Otahuhu Trotting Club was brought, to a conclusion on Saturday in beautifully fine weather. Once again the attendance was very large and the sport proved very interesting- Mr. C. O’Connor was back again at the starting mark, while Mr. Absolum filled the judge’s box. Mr. Edwards’ handicapping brought about some close finishes. Mr. Fred Yonge carried out the secretarial duties with entire satisfaction to everybody. Betting was very brisk, the sum of £3925 being handled by Mr. C. F. Mark and his staff as against £3619 ’ for the corresponding day. last year. The total for the meeting was £10.722 an increase of £1546- Bookmako's’ fees for Saturday amounted to £126. and for the meeting £375, an advice of £l4B on last season’s fixture’.

The sport was resumed with the President’s Trot, one mLe, Queen Anne being ticked off as something very special. Elba was first away of the ten starters, but gradually Manxman caught her. and the scratch horse won as he liked by a dozen lengths from Rita 8., who beat Elba by two lengths in a brush home. Of the seven starters in the Papatoetoe Trot, one mile and a-half, Albert H. was best supported. Major Election was soon out in front but breaking, let up Bert. The latter got by at the dip. and coming away won by over a dozen lengths from Macquarrie, who beat Major Election in the last little bit by a length.

Nine ponies turned out for the Manukau Handicap, four furlongs, and despite two indifferent displays at the meeting, punters fairly rushed to get on to Mahinga. The favourite got away, but before the bend was reached Norma headed the mare and turned into the straight a length to the good. With heads turned for home Deeley brought Mahinga. and the daughter of Soult romped home in very fast time, beating Norma by two lengths, while Carmania was nearly a length further off. As the time equalled the record for the track, the stewards called upon Pearson and

Gallagher, who had the mount in the other races, to explain the apparent inconsistency, and the enquiry has been adjourned.

wnen tne simmer of excitement had cooled off, the Criterion Trot, two miles, came on for decision. A dozen went to the post for this. Lena G. led out, only to be supplanted by 0.Y.0. Next Kirikiriroa went to the front, with Bogey next. Princess Ena was coming fast from scratch, and at the home turn she was within a length from the leader, Bogey. The latter breaking, Princess Ena swept past, and finishing in fine style won by three lengths, while Tableau was a dozen lengths off third. The winner trotted the two miles in 4min 54sec. — a great performance-

Nelson and Minnie B were the fancies for the Onehunga Trot, one mile and a-half. a great field of sixteen turning out. Minnie B. had a big lead in the early stages, with Albert Edward second. Harold Abdallah gradually closed up, and going to the front some distance from home, won by five lengths from Minnie 8.. who was nearly caught by Bert in the last fifty yards. Nine went out for the Ladies’ Bracelet, one mile and a-quarter. The lucky winner of the ornament proved to be Mrs. May, who nominated Daydawn. The latter trotted consistently throughout and won by four lengths from Bert, who was a length ahead of Cleveland’s Pride. Irish Molly was the punters’ selection in the February Trot, one mile, for which eleven competed- Clylie and V.S. were early in the lead and the latter went right away, and not being afterwards headed won by ten lengths from Waitekauri, with the favourite third, Barmeguie fourth, and Princess Ena fifth. The fixture was brought to a conclusion with the Dash Trot Handicap, one mile, Phyllistina and Mandarene being warmly supported. Phyllistina showed the way to lago and these two had a close duel until lago got away, and led up the straight. Mandarene came with a great rush in the straight, but just failed to get up. being beaten by a short head. A very enjoyable meeting was thus brought to a successful conclusion.
