HAWKE’S BAY.

NAPIER, February 10. On Monday Mr, P. Neagle sold Theodore to Mr. E. J. Watt, the price obtained for the colt being in the vicinity of a four-figure range. The squire of Longlands was not the only one who wanted to acquire possession of the latest star in the two year-old firmament. Mr. Watt, however, got to business briskly, and the colt was his.

A half-sister to Theodore by Wonderland, Sublime by name, was one of ?e “also started” brigade at the justconcluded G ; sborne Racing Club’s summer meeting. Regarding Theodore I have somewhere seen it stated that Heavenly Twin, served by Merriwe,e was presented by Mr. Watt to Mr. Neagle. Such was not the case. Heavenly Twin was obtained by her present owner from a friend of his, and on his own account and by his own choice the mare was mated with Merriwee, and it does not require a deal of perception to ; prophesy that Heavenly Tw ; n next term will again form one of Merri-wee’s harem- Last season she was associated with King’s Guest, who is bred on somewhat similar lines to Mr. Watt’s stallion, for they are both by Ihe same sire, Bill of Portland out of Trenton mares. Last week in Gisborne Full Cry was sold by auction, Mr. W. Spencer gving 52 guineas for Reynard’s son. Chanteuse left this morning for Gisborne to carry out her contracts at the summer meeting of the Poverty Bav Turf Club’s meeting.

Peregrine who has been having a holiday, will shortly join Atlas Wh’te’s band of workers at Wa’pawa. White's pup-1?, Polynices. Voetgang, Waoriki and a two year-old daughter of Te Hapuka and Cartouche, are progressing satisfactorily in their studies. Nor‘h Pole has left Greenmeadows and the gelding is once more an occupant of a box at Karamu. Tuatahi, who was recently purchas-

ed by a patron of Lord’s, is one of Moral’s stable comrades.

The Waipukurau Jockey Club intends to have one of Saywell’s latest starting machines in use at their annual race gathering on Easter Monday. Sweet Helen’s foal son by Birkenhead has been christened New Guinea, and the same mare’s rising two-year-old daughter by Merriwee has had -the appellation of Lady Reina claimed for her.

Waiariki (San Fran—Waiapurata), who was purchased by Mr. B. Shadbolt from the Douglas Brothers last year, has now filled out greatly, having lost that lathy appearance that was so apparent in him when he was carrying silk a season back- He has lately joined I. S. O’Neill’s band of toilers, and so far has given evidence that the rest has done nim good. The weight adjuster for the Poverty Bay Turf Club must have an excellent opinion of the powers possessed by Cockatoo, for in the Welter of one mile he was top of the list with list against his name, Te Arai, who won two hurdle events at Gisborne last week and who also captured the County Stakes at Wairoa last month with 9st in the saddle, coming next with a stone less than Seraph’s son. Again in the Turanga Stakes, one mile and a-quarter. Cockatoo had pride of place with 9st, Chanteuse at Bst 91b being the next on the adjustment. No wonder Hickey scratched the gelding, who was also top of the poll in the First Hack, where, with a 7st minimum, he was set to carry lOst 31b Prince Hassan, with 181 b less, being his nearest attendant in the weight allotment.

Rock Ferry paid a great price in a field of three in the Electric Handicap of five furlongs on the concluding day of the Gisborne Racing Club’s summer fixture. A. Wood’s students, five in number, are fast being knocked into shape. The bunch consists of Mollington, a full brother to Contendent, and Satisfaire Claughton, a three off son of The Shrew by Birkenhead, a full sister to Valonia, a younger full brother to Kairona and Pellicle, and a halfblooded relative by Birkenhead to Defiant and Defiance. The Maiden and Scurry Handicap evpr’t*’ at Gisborne last ween attracted a lot of wel’-b-'ed horses, a contention that ! s borne out when I state that Birkenhead Merriwee. Soult, Waiuku. San Remo, Cyren’an, Kitchener, Conqueror, Monaco and Sabretache all had representatives carrying silk.

The Squatter is st'll being walked about by Mr. G. D- Beatson. That one-time good performer Jackpot is be’ng got ready for the fray, and be is now quartered in the Puketanu district.

Harry Piper passed t hrongh here this morn mg en route to Gisborne, where he will set the fields going at the Poverty Bay Turf Club’s summer venture.

Mystification has been associated with several brood matrons on Porangahau station.

Baldos, winner of the Maiden Scurry at Gisborne last week, was bred at Mangatarata station. He is a four-year-old son of Waiuku and Bonne Idee, and consequently a full brother to Satis and hal'-brother to Happy Thought, and Splendid Idea. As a yearling he was sold for 40 guineas.

At the monthly meet’ng of the Hawke’s Bay Jockey Club Metropol’tan Comm'ttee held yesterday, it was decided to write to the clubs under the Hawke’s Bay iurisd’ction asking for an expression of opinion in regard to stipendiary stewards An interim balance sheet of the summer race meeting was submitted to a meeting of the Hawke’s Bay Jockey Club committee yesterday showing a surplus of £934. Messrs. G. Hunter L. de Pelichet and Sir W. R- Russell were appointed to meet the Agricultural and Pastoral Societies’ sub committee on the racecourse next Friday regarding the proposed alteration of buildings. The annual general meeting of the Waipukurau Jockey Club was held in the Tavistock Hotel on Friday night, Mr. Geo. Hunter in the chair. There was a good attendance of members. The balance sheet and report showing the club to be in a strong financial position was passed as read. Five new members were elected, and al] last year’s officers were re-elected, w’th the substitute!! of Mr. G*. B. Ashley in place of Mr. Geo. Lomas as a steward. A recommendation was made to fhe incoming committee to provide facilities for train’ng horses on the club’s property. At Tie conclusion of the general meetmg a committee meetmg was held, Mr. G- Hunter in the chair. All last year's officials were appointed, with the exception that Mr. A. Wood was substituted in place of Mr. A. Foodwin as starter. The programme for the an-

nual race meeting was drawn up on similar lines to that of last year’s card, the sum set aside for distribution in stakes totalling £775. A slight alteration was made in the conditions attached to the ladies’ race, the nominator of the winner now receiving a gold watch to the value of 30sovs, the nomintor of the second horse to receive a gold watch valued at 20sovs. It was decided that the recommendation from the general committee re training facilities be left in the hands of the vice-president to arrange. The tender of Messrs. Marett and Fox to work and provide the totalisator at the annual race meeting was accepted, and the secretary was instructed to purchase a starting barrier.
