AUCKLAND RACING CLUB’S GREAT SUMMER CARNIVAL.

THIRD DAY. HUSBANDMAN WINS THE DERBY. ALL RED’S GREAT PERFORMANCE. The summer meeting of the Auckland Racing Club was advanced a further step on Friday. The morning was beautifully fine, but a sudden change of wind from the south-west to the north brought up ominous-looking clouds, and fine showers fell during the afternoon, while in the evening the rain fell in torrents'. The attendance was again very large, about equalling that of Cup Day. Betting was brisk, the sum of £22,207 going through the totalisator, while 39 bookmakers were licensed, and all appeared to do well. Two bands were engaged, the Garrison Band playing under the trees and the City Band on the lawn, and this considerably helped towards the enjoyment of those present. Mr. Hartland, who was welcomed back after his recent illness', made very satisfactory arrange- - ••’ants for the smooth running of tne meeting, and his efforts, and those ,of his staff, were crowned with entire success. Racing was resumed with the feiguson Handicap, six furlongs, for which Ngapuka was sorted out as a fairly good thing. The start was a good one. Hohungatahi immediately showing out from Rarata and Mark Time, and so they ran to the straight, where Miss Advance was at the fail of the field. At the distance Mark Time came through on the rails, and finishing well, won by three-quarters of a length from Hohungatahi. who beat the fast-finishing Miss Advance by a neck, while Keep Step was close up fourth. j ~ ~ „ Only a quartette contested the New Year’s Hurdle Race, two miles, Reservoir being most fancied. his backers were soon out of i 3USp ®^ se o s his rider (Jones) came off at the second jump. Hautapu went sailing Xng m P tbe lead all the way. with Luscombe and Waihekau next T latter ran up to the leader half a mi from home, but struck heavily and lost several lengths. Hautapu was never pushed, and he got home an

• asy winner by five lengths from Luscombe, who was as far ahead of Waihekau. Santa Rosa and Nobel were the absentees for the Thirty-fifth Great Northern Derby, and this was looked upon as a duel between Husbandman and Master Soult, who were backed in that order, while Diabolo carried a good many investments. The start was an excellent one. but to the general surprise Master Soult who would have been suited by a slow race, started to make the pace, and he led past the stand from Diabolo, Husbandman. Waimangu and Aborigine with St. Aidan last. Round the top Master Soult was still in front, but at the six-furlong post Husbandman went up to him, and the two drew out from the d. Husbandman turned into the straight just in advance, and altnough Master Soult chased him home all the way. Sir George Clifford’s colt won by a length and a-half, while Diabolo was •o and a-half lengths off third. Aborigine being a head away fourth, Chanteuse fifth, and St. Aidan last. The County Handicap, six furlongs, attracted six runners. Tamainupo and Devonport being best supported. Gold Lace and Wauchope rushed away in front, the last to begin being Dawn. Gold Lace was first into the straight, followed by Wauchope, Tamainupo. and Devonport. who was several lengths back. From the distance Devonport came with a wonderful run on the inside, and finishing very fast won by a length from Gold Lace and Tama’nupo. whom Mr. Lusk was unable to separate. Wauchope was fourth and Dawn last. For the A.R.C. Handicap, one mile and a-half nine went to the post, Carl Rosa being made favourite. From a good start Carl Rosa showed the way into the straight, but passing the stand All Red had taken charge, being followed by Carl Rosa. Stratagem and Pohutu. Down the back the top weight was still sailing along ahead of Stratagem. Ikon and Carl Rosa, who was falling back. The Cup winner was first into the straight, having a two lengths’ advantage. At the distance Carl Rosa came through but he could make no impression on All Red, although Deeley sent him along for all the was worth All Red running home strongly by a length and a-half, Master Delaval being a similar dis■mce off third. Downfall was fourth, Ikon fifth and Zimmerman sixth. First Gun. Stratagem and Pohutu fellthe two latter apparently being brought down by the Hotchiss gelding at the mile and a-half post. Then came the Midsummer Handicap. a five-furlong flutter for two-year-olds. Nine turned out for this. Kakama and Meriwa being best supported. Etna jumped out very smartly, and attended by Kakama led to the straight, with Xylophone next. With heads turned for home Kakama showed in front, but at the distance Me’iwa joined issue, and showing too much pace for the top weight, won by a length. Sharpshooter was a length off third, followed by Golden Water. St. Amans, and Etna, with Hyperion The Messrs. Stead’s representative Nobel, was a very strong order for the Maiden Handicap, one mile and aquarter. in which five went to the post. Kotiti and Cyrona led out past the stand- but down the back the latter passed the Daystar gelding, who was followed by Sedition, Rimlock, and Nobel. Then Nobel was rushed up, while Sedition forged his way ' ■ the front. The son of Soult was a length clear as he turned into the straight, and coming away he won by three lengths from Nobel, who was two lengths ahead of Cyrona. Rimlock and Kotiti following in that order. The day’s racing was brought to a close with the Maiden Handicap, seven furlongs, and of the nine runners fully half-a-dozen were strongly backed, most investments going on Santa Rosa. Cambrian and Maheno. Aristocra.. and Maheno were first to begin, but thev had not gone far before Tui Cakobau went to the front, and closely attended by Inglis, he led down the back with Cambrian third. Tui Cakobau and Inglis came into the straight together, where Tui was done with,

“THE JUDGE.”)

and Cambrian challenged Inglis. There was a great battle between this pair all the way up the straight, Inglis winning by half a length, with Tui Cakobau two lengths off third. Bully, Aristocrat and Maheno came next, and Sir Tristram last.

Time, lm. 27 2-ss. FOURTH DAY. OUTSIDERS WIN THE GRANDSTAND HANDICAP AND ROYAL STAKES. The big meeting was brought to a conclusion on Saturday in fine, but windy, weather, and once again there was a large muster of the public. Everything went off very well, the only fault to find being the long delay in starting the last race, which made the return to town unduly late, hundreds not getting back until long after seven o’clock. Mr. O’Connor continued to achieve uniform successes at the starting barrier, and Mr. Lusk's decisions were given with the utmost promptness. Two bands again helped to enliven proceedings. During the afternoon the sum of £17,505 was passed through the totalisator. making a grand total for the meeting of £79.480%, as against £82,982 for lhe corresponding meeting last year. This falling off was probably caused by the continued defeats of the favourites. and the meeting will go on record as the most disastrous to punters in the history of Ellerslie. The sum of £3136 was received in fees from bookmakers, but despite this large outlay they must have made a lot of money. The last day’s programme was commenced with the Goodwood Handicap, one mile, in which nine carried silk, and of these Paritutu, who had the services of Jenkins, was made favourite. The start was a capital one. Tui Cakobau and Inglis being in the van. They had not gone far when Inglis displaced Mr. Duder’s gelding, which fell back fourth. Inglis showed the way into the straight, followed by Ngapuka, but with heads turned for home Ngapuka drew out and won by two lengths from Tui Cakobau. who finished well and beat Dunborve by three-quarters of a length. Grenadier was a neck away fourth. Eight two-year-olds contested the Sylvia Handicap, six furlongs, for which Meriwa was a solid favourite. The race was a very pretty one. Fighting Fish being in the van in the early stages, closely attended by Sharpshooter, who had gone to the front before they reached the bend. Sharpshooter swung into the straight nearly a length to the good, with the favourite coming fast. At the distance there were four in a line, but. Meriwa finishing very gamely, won by half a length from Sharpshooter, with Idealism a similai’ distance further off, followed by Fighting Fish and Royal Scotland. Master Soult was a very strong order for the Grandstand Handicap, one mile and a-quarter, in which he was opposed by four, of which Carl Rosa was considered the best. Without any delay Mr. O’Connor let them go to a beautiful start, and as they swept past the stand Leonator was just showing from Master Soult, who had Celtic at his girths. Running down the back Leonator was going strong in front, and at the five-furlong post he and Master Soult drew right ouc from the field. Master Soult was nearly level at the distance, blit Leonator was still full of running, and when Brown was seen to draw his whip it was realised that once, again a favourite was beaten. Running on without the whip Leonator won by a length and a-half from Master Soult, Celtic being four lengths off third, followed by Carl Rosa and Bully. Out of the eleven in the Fourteenth Royal Stakes, only three were found willing to tackle the supposedly redoubtable Broadsword, who started a red-hot favourite. Once again punters were destined to receive a shock, one of the many they had been getting at the meeting. When the barrier rose Coromandel was first to begin. but Armlet was soon out in front, with Broadsword next and Elysian last. Armlet showed the way into the straight, but at the distance, when

Jones called on the favourite for an effort, he fairly shirked the contest, and Armlet won handily by a length and a-half from Elysian, who dashed up on the rails and beat Broadsword by a neck, Coromandel being three lengths off last.

Five went out for the Auckland Hurdle Race, two miles, and of these Reservoir met with most support. The race was rather more interesting than usual, for at the distance the issue was in doubt. Hautapu went sailing away with the lead, but he was not allowed to have undisputed possession, for, after passing the stand, Waihekau went up to him. Hautapu shook him off, whereupon Luscombe tackled the top weight. Hautapu was just in front as they turned into the straight, but here Reservoir closed up, and the chestnut was first over the last hurdle. Running on under pressure Reservoir won by three lengths from Creusot, who made up a lot of ground in the last bit, and beat Hautapu by a length for third place. Luscombe was fourth and Waihekau last. A field of nine went to the post for the Newmarket Handicap, six furlongs, and on the strength of his Railway Handicap win Royal Soult was made a warm favourite. His chance, however, was spoilt by losing several lengths at the start. Tarina jumped off in front, and led to the home bend, with Gold Lace next. With heads turned for home Tamainupo in the centre and Wauchope on the rails, put in their claims. A fine race took place to the judge’s box, Wauchope getting the best of it, and winning by half a length from Tamainupo, with Flitaway two lengths off third. Royal Soult was fourth, Devonport fifth. Gold Lace sixth, and Cambrian last. The field for the Auckland Plate was reduced to three, and with Zimmerman and Master Delaval not at their best. Bobrikoff was a long odds-on favourite, a good deal of wagering taking place as to how the other two would finish. Zimmerman dashed off with the lead, and he was two lengths ahead passing the stand, with Bobrikoff second. Running down the back Zimmerman was still striding along in front, while Master Delaval ran up to Bobrikoff. Half a mile from home the favourite went to the front, and as he turned into the straight two lengths ahead of Zimmerman it was realised the race was over. Coming on he won easily by three lengths from Zimmerman, who just beat Master Delaval in a stirring finish by a neck. The curtain was rung down on the summer meeting with the Grey Handicap. five furlongs, which attracted the biggest field of the carnival, eighteen going to the post. With anything like a good start, the race looked a fairr thing for Hohungatahi, but Hard Rock and Miss Advance were the actual favourites. Hohungatahi jumped out in front, and never giving anything else a chance, won by over a length from Grizelle, who finished fast and beat Keep Step by half a length for second place.
