WANGANUI.

WANGANUI, December 9

A great deal of interest is being taken in the Wanganui Trotting Club’s meeting, which is to be held on Saturday, the 12th inst. The acceptances received are exceedingly good, and given fine weather the meeting should be a big success. It is many years since any trotting races were held here, and the novelty of the sport is bound to draw a large attendance. The officials of the club have made careful arrangements for the successful carrying through of the programme, and the management should leave little to be desired. George Powell is treating Waddy to swimming exercise in the hope that this will benefit the filly’s leg, which was rather badly bruised some three months ago. If the leg improves sufficiently the filly will compete at the Taranaki meeting. The successes of D’Nil and Eclogue at Feilding were quite expected .by those who, had seen the pair working recently. Research was sent up to Waitara, where the son of Renown was expected to run prominently in the Cup, but he could do no better than get fourth. Nightmare and Contour will represent the Fordell stable at Woodville.

Both of these mares are in good nick, and should run prominently in their engagements.

After C. Jenkins had won the Third Feilding Stakes on Gold Crest, the crack jockey was presented by Mr. F. Y. Lethbridge, President of the Feilding Club, on behalf of Mr. Dunbar, of Feilding, with a handsome goldmounted whip. At a meeting of stewards of the Foxton Racing Club, a lengthy discussion took place re the suggestion made by the Wanganui Metropolitan Club in reference to the appointment of stipendiary stewards. Finally it was resolved that the secretary be instructed to reply to the effect that while the Foxton Club is in sympathy with the movement, it considers that it is a matter for the Racing Conference to take up before district clubs are asked for an opinion.
