HE PUFFED AND HE PUFFED.
“How long can I keep my pipe alight?” This was the question-near-ly 400 smokers set themselves to solve in Sydney one night last week. The result was something of a staggerer, for one man was successful in keeping his pipe going for two hours 16 minutes, said to be one minute better than the world’s record, put up in Germany. The contest was promoted by a firm of tobacco manufacturers, and began at eight o’clock; but by 9.30 scarcely a score of pipes were still going. Then at frequent intervals a smokef would leave his seat and drop out of the competition, until only two smokers remained. At 9.45 the pipe of one of them gave out, and the other went on for another half-hour, and he was, amid loud applause, proclaimed the victor. He was, J. J. Graves, of Surry Hills, and he pocketed a prize of £lO.
