WANGANUI.

WANGANUI, July 8. A Marton syndicate has purchased Saltpetre, who will probably make his appearance at the Marton Spring Meeting.

Mr G. S. Fulton, of Hunterville, has purchased Speciosa, who, together with Saltpetre, is trained by T. Lloyd, at Crofton. Lloyd also has Mahuta under his charge. The black son of Mohaki is having a quiet time of it at present, but is expected to be given a race at the Marton meeting, in view of his engagement in the N.Z. Cup. A two-year-old named Projectile, another inmate of this stable, is highly spoken of, and it is thought he will figure amongst the winners early in the coming season. Though it has been freely stated that Martello had been returned to his owner and was not now an inmate of the Fordell stable, the son of

Hotchkiss is still under Fred Tilley’s care. Whether or not another attempt will be made to train him is not yet known. A friend who visited the Hawke’s Bay district recently, has a big opinion of California (a three-year-old colt by San Fran —Dazzle), who is described as one of the most promising looking colts seen out for some time. Some good judges reckon that this colt will prove a top-notcher during the coming season. The Marton Jockey Club’s programme for their annual meeting on the 2nd and 3rd September has been published, and is one which should attract big nominations. The Marton Handicap (first day) and Crofton Handicap (second day) are the two chief events, and will be worth 150 and 120 sovs respectively, while all the other events have had their prize money added to. Nominations close on the 14th August. The club have had a number of improvements made to their grounds and appointments. The grandstand has been doubled in size, and nice paths made for the convenience of patrons going to and from the course. The track is in excellent condition now, and the plough also is in capital order.
