CANTERBURY.
CHRISTCHURCH, June 17. Slow Tom is in active work in view of the Wellington winter meeting, and if he should train on, the aged son of St. Ives should be in good form by then. At headquarters there has been very little serious work. The tracks are in very good order, but from the Canterbury point of view the Grand National Meeting is the chief jumping event of the year, and though some of the horses from headquarters may be competing at Wellington, the majority of them will wait -for the - Jlic'cartoh*" meeting in August. Last Saturday Southern Cross (W. Better) and Kelp (G. E. Pine) started out on a schoolingtask Ove£, big fences, but the former showed poorly, and at the sod wall came to grief.
Better broke his collarbone and received a very severe shaking. Stronghold, Farley Grove and Shimmer have been schooled over the hurdles, and have shaped very well. Members of the British Rugby team paid a visit to Riccarton during the week, and were evidently . pleased with what they saw. Dan Morraghan has Deerslayer and John Peel in work again. W. Clarke Jias received a new. addition to his string in the shape of a five-year-old mare by Westmere — Fisho, and she should, on looks, be a '■ good performer over the sticks. J. Selbv. the huntsman of the Christchurch Hunt Club, is now owner of Rawiri, a full brother to Waiuku. He is reported to be a natural jumper, and is shaping well in his tasks.
