HAWKE’S BAY.
NAPIER, May 13.
Hipporofla’s two-year-old half-sister by Renown Has had the name of Replica bestowed upon her. J. Webster (Mr. H. Gaisford’s private trainer) has just broken in a trio of fillies. Two of the bunch, Lifeline and an unnamed daughter of Kilcheran and Moreze, are two-year-olds. The other, Chanton, is a three-year-old by Waipawa out of Chatelaine.
Gauze has left the post for the paddock, and her racing days will now be numbered with the things of the past, as The Officer’s daughter will be bred from in the future.
G. Co’lelo has sent Maharatanga home to her owner. Mr. L. Jones, of Puketapu. Crackpot, who is now studying under his owner, has joined the fencing brigade, and in his new work is
showing a fair amount of aptitude. D. O’Meara, the stud groom at Te Mahanga, has recently broken in a fine-looking three-year-old son of Torpedo and Secret. He is a takinglooking customer, who should develop into a good one over the obstacles.
Maku, one of the latest additions to the ranks of the “ leppers,” is proving reliable over the schooling hurdles.
Jet De More has changed his residence, the chestnut gelding now being one of Tamati Wehikore’s pupils at Dannevirke, and consequently a stable comrade of Monsieur Beaucaire, Tua Tahi, and Brown Belt. J. Cameron has claimed the cognomen Mediterranean for the rising three-year-old gelding by San Fran out of Lady Bevys. Country patrons who used the railway as a means of transit to the Hastings course last Friday were a good deal exasperated when they discovered that there were no excursion rates available upon that date. The Cockatoo and Grand Slam put
up a sort of record recently, for in their last three starts the horses have filled the third position in their respective races.
Goldfield, previous to her win on Friday, had also run three consecutive thirds.
Maku’s half-sister by Merriwee, who was knocked down on Saturday for 60 guineas, was purchased by Mr. T. Milrose, who has Truginini doing well for him.
A. Vincent, who went to Sydney about a year ago to gain further knowledge in horse dentistry, is back again at Hastings. I presume we will shortly see him floating out in the practice of his profession.
Rawhiti, who secured such an easy victory in the Ohiti Hack Hurdles on Friday, is a full brother to the defunct Tyford, and a half-blooded relative to Post Haste.
Some curious reasons are given at times by backers for supporting their fancies, but the most novel that has come under my notice for some time was that adduced by a lady on the last day of the Hawke’s Bay Jockey
