NOTES.

(By The Judge.) The Avondale J. C. Meeting will be brought to a conclusion on Saturday. v « e ib There were 30 applicants for the position W.A.T.C. (Perth) handicapper, an appointment recently conferred on Mr A. C. B. Main. * * * ® The disappointing Pearl Necklet has been entered for the Great Northern Hurdles. * » • ® The Sydney filly Malt Queen is evidently the champion two-year-old over there. She has now won six races in succession. * * * * The death occurred in America recently of J. W. Rogers, a noted trainer, who, for the past seven years, had charge of Mr Harry Payne Whitney’s racehorses. As Rogers died worth it is almost unnecessary to remark that there is a lot more money in horse-training in Ammerica than in the colonies. « * « 0 No less than twenty-eight horses started in the National Hunt Steeplechase, of 815 sovs, 4 miles 150 yards, at Warwick (Eng.) last month, and the race was won by the favourite Rory O’Moore, who carried 12 st 31b. Seventeen completed the course. * * * * Kirk’s Bazaar, the historic centre of the horse trade in Melbourne, and the city rendezvous for graziers, farmers, and other country residents, was sold the other dav through the agency of Messrs W. H. A 7 lard and Co., to the present tenants, Messrs Campbell and Sons. From the year 1840 the property, comprising little more than half an acre, has been a horsebazaar. * * « • At the Royal Agricultural Society’s Show, at Moore Park, Sydney, Lady Morton, on muddy ground won the high jump, clearing 6ft 6in. In the ladies’ high jump she failed at sft gin, but at the close of the competition Mrs Stace got her over 6ft 4m, which is the ground record for a horse ridden by a lady. Lady Morton is owned by Wirth Brothers, who were recently in Auckland. Their pony Maori won the 13.2 high jump, easily clearing 4ft loin. Rain affected the Onkaparinga. meeting (the most popular oneaay gathering in Australia) on Easter Mondav and the attendance. instead of being a record, was only 15.000 or 16,000, and the totalisator investments ; that, however, being an improvement on the -£19,068 of last vear.

The N.Z. St. Leger will be run for next Saturday. * * • . • The gross receipts of the matches of the English cricket team in Australia amounted to 15s 2d. * « « « Some strong expression of public opinion are being made (says “Melbourne Sporting News”) concerning the drastic clause in the Gaming Act, which prevents newspapers publishing the odds prior to a race. The result of over a year’s application of the provision, shows that it has only one effect, the playing into the hands of unscrupulous bookmakers. It is more than likely that some modification of the clause may be sought when the State Parliament meets after Easter. Sir George Clufford’s filly Flitaway is said to be as good as Fleetfoot. Evidently there are more smart fillies about than colts. The Imperial Cabinet Council of Saint Petersburg has received a petition from the Municipality of Moscow praying for the abolition of the totalisator in the Empire as fraught with inordinate temptation to gambling among classes whose means do not permit them to take any interest in the racing and who regarded the system of speculation as a mere lottery. Mr James R. Keene, the wide’y-known American racehorse owner, has in five years won in stakes just over £200,000. Large as this total is it does not represent a big surplus over expenses for the term mentioned. The upkeep of the stable and the conduct of the Castleton Stud, where most of Mr Keene’s horses are bred, are said by an authentic authority to have amounted to during the five years. Mr J. B. Reid, of Elderslie, purchased six yearlings at the Sydney bloodstock sales. There were four fillies by St. Alwyn, one by Glaucus, and a half-brother to Caravil. * * * * A sale of bloodstock was conducted by Mr H. O. Nolan, of the New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Company, Limited, at the Harp of Erin stables, Ellerslie, on A’pril 22. The following sales were effected : —Electra, by Castor — Welcome Katie, with filly by Seaton Delaval, and served by Seaton Delaval, 50 gs, Mr E. A. Price; St. Paul, by St. Leger—Satanella, sogs, Mr P. Chaafe; Port Light, by Blue-jacket—Radiant, 45 gs, Mr. Worsp; a mare, by Howitzer —Fair Lilian, with foal at foot, by Rambler, and served by Rambler, 25gs, Mr H. McKenzie. Malt Queen, the crack Australian two-year-old, was got by the Bill of Portland horse Malster from Her Majesty, by Sunrise from Muriel, by Kelpie from Lady Fanny bv Barbarian. Poseidon made ample amends for his defeat on the second day at Randwick, by winning the Cumberland Stakes, of 1000 sovs on the third day, and the A.J.C. Plate, of 1000 sovs on the fourth day of the A.J.C. meeting. He was probably short of a gallop when beaten. There are 35 entries for the Great Northern Hurdles,, 26 in the Great Northern Steeplechase, and 24 in the Winter Steeplechase. Two of the English brigade won races at the A.J.C. meeting at Randwick. These were Argea, a daughter of Chev•ening, who won the Coogee Handicap, and St. Aymer, a son of Sir Hugo, who captured the Maiden Stakes. * * • • Tartan put up a fine performance in the Sydney Cup with gst gib on his back, getting a good second to Dyed Garments. « • • * The King appears to have a good colt in Perrier, who won the Biennial Stakes at Newmarket the other day. He is very well spoken of as a likely Derbv winner. « * v • A bay colt by Grafton from Gold Dust realised the highest price at the Sydney yearlings sales, viz., guineas. • * * * The surprise of the first day’s racing at Avondale was Marangai’s victory in the Railway Handicap. He was quite neglected in the betting, and paid a big dividend. This was not a little surprising, as he ran very fairly at Ellerslie the other day.
