BOXING.

THE NORTHERN BOXING ASSOCIATION. The annual general meeting of the Northern Boxing Association takes place this evening at the Amateur Sports Club. Mr. J. D. Yonge, the secretary, courteously forwards me a copy of the report and balance-sheet which reads as follows. — “Your Committee has great pleasure in placing before members the Annual Report and Balance Sheet for the year ending 31st March, 1908. When the committee took office last year, the total liabilities of the Association amounted to £125 4s 4d, this sum, however, has been reduced during the past season to £B5 11s 2d. But for the action of a local Club, unaffiliated with the New Zealand Boxing Association, advertising an unauthorised Australasian Championship Meeting on the eve of the New Zealand Championships, which had been allotted to Auckland by the New Zealand Council, a much larger reduction would have been made and the New Zealand Council’s share of the profits from the Championship Meeting would have been considerably increased. “With a view of preventing the public from again being victimised, and the sport, degraded, representations were made to the Legislature by the

New Zealand Council, with the result that amendments were made to the Police Offences Act, at the close of last Session, cancelling all existing registrations throughout the Dominion, and requiring such Associations or Clubs as might desire to be re-regis-tered, to first obtain the approval of the Governor-in-Council. This will prevent in future coteries of irresponsible individuals running boxing competitions for their own pecuniary benefit, and will eliminate other objectionable features which on several occasions have brought boxing into disrepute in this Province. Your committee has taken the necessary steps to comply with the requirements of the Act, so that the Association will shortly again be in a position to place a good programme before the public. “Notwithstanding that the annual subscription for members was raised last season to one guinea, every vacancy has been filled by electing thereto gentlemen who had been duly nominated, and it will be for members to decide whether or not the limitation of membership to fifty, as provided in Clause 5 of the present rules is to be amended. It will also be necessary for members to consider the whole of the rules of the Association before they are forwarded to Wellington for registration under the Amended Act. AUCKLAND PROVINCIAL CHAMPIONSHIPS. “On the 22nd and 29th July, these were held at the Royal Albert Hall, and drew good entries. Keen interest was exhibited in this tournament as it was generally understood that the result would guide the committee in the selection of the Provincial team to compete in the New Zealand Championships. The results were: Heavyweight, T. Lewis; middle-weight. T. Lewis; light-weight, J. Maloney; fea-ther-weight, W. Hogan; bantamweight, J. Montague. THE NEW ZEALAND CHAMPIONSHIPS. On the 30th and 31st of August the New Zealand Championship Meeting was held in His Majesty’s Theatre, and as this was the first time Championship honours had been competed for in Auckland, more than ordinary interest was taken in the events, as the majority of the visiting competitors who hailed from Invercargill, Canterbury, and Wellington, had not been seen in the Auckland ring before. The disappointment experienced on account of the failure of the local lads to win a share of the laurels, was more than compensated for by the good form and science shown by the Southerners, and as the latter shortly afterwards succeeded in winning three of the Australasian Championship events, and four .second prizes, the defeat of Auckland’s representatives in the New Zealand Championships may fairly be said to be due to their having met a very tough lot of opponents. “Mr. Tom Brown acted as referee, and gave universal satisfaction by his firm and impartial decisions, and tactful management of the contestants whilst they were in the ring, and your Committee desire to place on record their appreciation of his valuable services. The following were the results: —Bantam-weight: B. Tracey (Wellington), 1; J. Montague (Auckland), 2; feather-weight: E. Sanderson (Auckland), by default; lightweight: R. Mayze (Christchurch), 1;

A. J. Blewden (Auckland), 2; middleweight: J. Gilmour (Christchurch), 1; H. Fletcher (Wellington), 2; heavyweight: J. Lloyd (Christchurch), 1; H. Sandow (Wellington), 2. AUSTRALASIAN CHAMPIONSHIPS. “These were held in the Opera House, Wellington, on the 10th and 11th September, and drew good entries. New South Wales and Queensland were represented by teams of five and three respectively, and New Zealand by nine contestants. The several contests proved interesting throughout, that between A. L. Nash of Christchurch, and J. Lane of New South Wales, raising the audience to the highest enthusiasm. The New Zealander ultimately won a sensational battle. The results were: — Bantam, E. Lusher-Fenn, New South Wales, 1; J. Parker, Christchurch, 2; Feather-weight, W. Elliott, Timaru, 1; A. Tresize, Ashburton, 2; Lightweight, R. Mayze, Christchurch, 1; D. White, New South Wales, 2; Middleweight, A. J. Scanlan, Queensland. 1; L. Fletcher, Wellington, 2; Welter, A. L. Nash, Christchurch, 1; J. Lane, New South Wales, 2; Heavy-weight, C. Hill, New South Wales, 1; J. L. Lloyd, Christchurch, 2. This is the second time the Australasian Championships have been competed for in this Dominion (i.e., in Christchurch and Wellington), and your Committee hope that on the next occasion, the N.Z. Council will arrange for the meeting to be held in Aucklanad. This season the New Zealand representatives will visit Australia. AUCKLAND GARRISON’S COMPETITIONS. “In August the Officers of the Auckland Garrison asked the Association to obtain for them a permit to hold a b,oxing competition for Volunteers, in the Auckland Drill Hall, and to consent to the contests being carried out under the jurisdiction of the Officials of the Association, which request was duly complied with. The various events were keenly contested, and although the inclemency of the weather, on both nights, frustrated a financial success being achieved, the Garrison officers are to be congratulated on their initial efforts, as on the whole the showing was very creditable. It is to be hoped that similar tournaments will be arranged during the coming season.” The balance-sheet shows that the total liabilities of the Association have been reduced to £BS 11s 2d. Receipts amounted to £69 Is 2d, and expenditure to £39 13s 2d. All members are particularly requested to be present at the meeting to-night.
