HAWKE’S BAY.

NAPIER, April 29. In the Ladies’ Handicap at the Waipukurau meeting Repute succeeded in squeezing home from Maku. Repute was bred at Porangahau station by the Hunter Brothers, and is a son of Renown out of a Chainlink mare. He ran in the nomination of Miss Jessie Hunter, and she and two of her brothers held a ticket amongst them on the machine, the only investment the family had. Mr. Paul Hunter had his card made out for a fair bet on Repute, but got blocked on his way to the machine, and did not get up to the receiving clerk in time. Repute paid out the best dividend that has ever been returned on the Waipukurau course. For the first time in his racing career Mr. H. Limmer headed the list of winning owners at the Waipukurau meeting, his mare My Darling (Merriwee —Lady Darling) catching a double. It is more than probable that Gazeley will fill the post of lord of the harem at Longlands next season. A baby half-brother by Merriwee to Ropa is kicking his heels about on Longlands Estate. Ballyshannon, a younger full brother to The Boyne, a full brother to

Grand Slam of the same age, and a half-brother to King’s Lynn, ■ are amongst the growing stock under E. Quinlivan’s charge on Mr. E. J. Watt's estate. Lamsdorff and Golden Gate have been taken over by John Quinlivan, who arrived from Greymouth last week. Renown goes up for public auction next month. Two of his sons in Research and Repute, won on Easter Monday at Patea and Waipukurau respectively, and a daughter of his, Remission, got second at the latter place. She is a half-sister to the speedy Waikaraka. Grand Slam’s younger full brother has had the cognomen of Bridge bestowed upon him. Tribulation is the name that has been selected for the yearling full brother to Gravitation. The youngster is also a half-brother to Elevation. Some good work was done on the Hastings track on Saturday morning. The grass and plough tracks which are now in good order were both used. Robin Link, Waikoura and Rose Lethe galloped four furlongs, and Robin Link finished an easy first. Sir Benson beat Comedian by a length in a six furlongs gallop. Seatondale was beaten over five furlongs by Waipu at the end of once round. Separator and Cauldron, a full brother to Merriwee, did a dash over three furlongs, the former finishing the better of the two. Moriarty finished well after doing six furlongs by himself on the grass. Lamsdorff and Erl King did six furlongs, and there was not much to choose between them. Full Cry and Whakawehi were taken once round over the hurdles. Full Cry is improving greatly. Papatu, Pushful and Faro went once round without any mistakes. Dan Leno and Mata■puna went once round over the sticks. Matapuna gave the better display. At the second jump Dan Leno almost came to grief, but was straightened up and cleared the remaining obstacles fairly well. Gazeley, My Darling, Chatterer, Mystification, Remission, Bobrikoff, Kaipetipeti, King Billy, Millennial, Ahei, Berengaria, Bushranger and Chanteuse were given some useful work.
