THE SHORE CLUB HAVE A DRIFTING MATCH.

The North Shore Yacht Club had an ocean race at Kawau on Saturday, a thirty-knot course. The wind was of the lightest and from all quarters, while at times it was absolutely calm. As is usual with this club, a great fleet started, the yachts being as follows: —

Ilex scratch, Hartsease scratch, Kotiri 20m., Thistle 22m., Waiwere 22m., Emerald 30m., Hilda 34m., Yum Yum 32m., Mystery 34m., Mabel 39m., Maru 42m., Seagull 42m., Spindrift 48m., Tiro 48m., May Belle 58m., Wanderer 60m., Kaho 70m., Ethel 80m., Ranee 85m., Encounter 95m., Kamo 110 m., Rhona 125 m. The almost entire absence of wind, of course/ spoilt the handicap, and some of the yachts made very long passages, being, in-

deed, up to the record in this respect. Ultimately Mystery crossed the finishing line at twenty minutes to three next morning, with Wairere a quarter of an hour later, and then camo Thistle 15m. after, these three taking the prize. At long intervals Rhona, Heartsease, Yum Yum, Wanderer, and the others arrived, the last boat, Ethel, not getting in until after noon on Sunday. The big yawl Ilex took nineteen hours to complete the course, which must be the longest time she has ever occupied between Auckland and her home port, Kawau.

Hamilton regatta on Saturday was a successful function, a big crowd of people attending. Nearly all the races fell to Auckland crews.

Once again has the ex-Auckland boat Rawhiti been defeated by the Fife-designed Awanui. The Sydney champion was built to the new rule, while Rawhiti was not, and as a result she is heavily penalised.

Webb is pronounced favourite in his match against Tresidder for the world’s sculling championship.
