WELLINGGTON RACING CLUB'S SUMMER MEETING. A SURPRISE IN THE CUP. There was an excellent attendance on. the opening- day of the Welling-ton R.C. Summer Meeting- on Saturday, the weather being fine. With twenty bookmakers operating inside and thirty-two out, the totalisator showed a big falling off, the figures being £17,378 as against £25,255 last year. The Maori meeting at Orakei on Saturday at least gave rise to amusement, if nothing else. About three hundred people took advantage of the trip down the harbour and a run ashore at the beach, but the racing itself could hardly be considered seriously. The results were as follows:— MAIDEN RACE of 4sovs, one mile.— Matatua 1, Fenola 2, Hero 3. MAORI RACE of 4 sovs, one mile.— Anakoia 1, Slim Jim 2 Tikorare 3. PONY RACE of 4 sovs one mile.— Fenola 1, Demond 2, Gilleadit 3. A protest against the winner was dismissed. ORAKEI CUP of 9sovs, one mile and a-half. —Anakoia 1, Victory 2, Dandy 3. MAORI WEEDS RACE of 2sovs, six furlongs.—Karihika 1, Tikorare 2, Paitete 3. FLYING HANDICAP of ssovs, one mile.—Matatua 1, Gileadit 2, Victory 3. OTAMATEA SAGES, The Otamatea Racing Club’s meeting took place on Friday in fine weather, and there was a good attendance. The following were the results:— HURDLE RACE. —Lochard 1, Gipsy Queen 2, Swagsman 3. Won by half-a-length. MAIDEN HANDICAP. —Tartan 1, Almathea 2, Kiki 3.
