THE TAKAPUNA JOCKEY SUMMER MEETING.
COMMENCES NEXT SATURDAY.
On Saturday next the North Shore Ferry Company will have a brisk time conveying across to Devonport multitudes of people Dent on patronising the summer fixture of the Takapuna Jockey Club. This is always a pleasant gathering, and now the sun has been broiling us the opportunity of a trip acros sthe water in search of fresh air is one which no one will hesitate to take. After so much scorchingly hot and rainless weather one might have expected the course to be burnt up, but it is in better condition than might have been thought, and should be very fast. As usual, eight events will toe run, the chief one being the Takapuna Cup, one mile 3% furlongs, this distance being taken so that the horses have not to start on a bend. Twelve horses have accepted for it, and the issue looks decidedly open. Waipuna is in pride of place with 9st. a weight he earned by his consistent running at the A.R.C. summer meeting. Uraranium rather tarnished her reputation at the same fixture, tout is here nicely handicapped If she can get the distance. Uhlander has shown recent good form, while Carl Rosa is toy some considered a rod in pickle for the event. Those who saw Pohutu’s gallant effort to beat Zimmerman will give him a chance here with 7st 71b. The queerly-named Tui Cakobau will hardly like the length of the journey. Scotty appears to have lost his oldtime dash. Lord Seaton is uncertain, but the pony Fashionable’s great run, despite toad riding, in the Auckland Cup, will be remembered. Altogether it would seem that there is plenty of material for a good race, and he will be a lucky man who is able to correctly sort out the winner. Mr. Wynyard has all arrangements for a successful gathering well in hand, and with fine weather some good sport should be shown.
The meeting will toe continued on Wednesday and concluded the following Saturday. On the holiday, the Rangitoto Steeplechase will be run. Owing to it being cut up for building sites, part of the hill , cannot toe used,
and the jumpers will keep along the fence at the back of the enclosures, the last time which they will be able to do it.
