FAMOUS RESORT BURNED.
News of the desmictiqja by ’ fire lon September 7 of Sah . Franfeis£o’s ' ■ unique holiday resort —the - Cliff House, perched on a rocky promontory immediately without the-Golden directly above the ..lashing waves of the broad Pacific—recalls the fact that the very first detail‘regarding the great earthshake of April last year recorded that Cliff, House had slipped , into the sea. The seqilel showed that the * enterprising chronicler had been dealing in assumption—Cliff .Housev- still clung to. its perch. At' the . time destruction by fire the interior of the •' building was, being remodelled. This was the second house to be destroyed by fire. The building was erected by Adolph Sutro,, of Sutro.. tunnel fame, twelve years ago. Its value was 50,000 dollars, of which 35,0p0 dollars was covered by insurance.
One of the most . pleasing sights which greeted the- visitor to Cliff House was that of a school of seals disport ng themselves on. the Crocks near by- A one-time manager of the resort was Mr< Julius'‘Mendelson,'- formerly of Hawera.
