BOWLING.
The bowling greens in the Auckland province are beginning to present a lively appearance. A number of greens, including Richmond, Onehunga, Remuera, Ponsonby, Rocky Nook and Carlton were opened last Saturday.
The Ponsonby Club’s green presented a very pleasing appearance on Saturday afternoon, when the grounds and pavilion were prettily decorated with flags, etc., in honour of the opening ceremony, which was largely attended, and the rinks were in perfect condition. Prior to the formal opening, Mr. A. Coutts, on behalf of the members, extended a hearty welcome to Messrs. M. Casey (president), J. Hodgson (vice-president), and Jno. Court, on their return from a visit to England. The president (Mr. Casey) then formally declared the green open for play, Mrs. Casey performing the time-honoured custom of throwing the jack. Burke’s band discoursed music during the afternoon. Afternoon tea was presided over by Mrs. Casey, assisted by her daughters, and Mesdames Coutts, Langsford, Lee and Misses Edmiston, Carr and Thorne.
A large and representative gathering attended the opening of the Richmond green. The president (Mr. S. Pollard) welcomed all present, and dwelt on the loss the club had sustained in the death of the late superintendent (Mr. McMaster), to whose memory he paid a tribute of respect. He also mentioned that the club was in a thoroughly sound financial position, closing with 24 playing members and 10 hon. members last year, and opening this year with 47 playing members and 16 hon. members. Mrs. Bennett, the wife of one of the vicepresidents, was then requested to throw the jack across the green.
